My dyson has given up.....any recommendations for a brand new vacuum cleaner?

Title says it all really. My dyson has recently taken to blowing out it's contents rather than sucking! This morning, I decided that I'd had enough after it had dumped everything on the lounge carpet......

So, I'm off to get a new vaccuum cleaner, but which one? I quite fancy a Henry but are they any good?

Anyone got any suggestions? Can't leave it too long as I have two little messy monsters!
TIA
mj

Henry is fine, very sturdy, not too heavy, good capacity and widely available at a good price

The only thing you might notice is the bags are not cheap but that is pretty much the case with all baggy cleaners...

my sister has a Henry, but I'm a Dyson girl. The small portable one is great for me, but depends on pets/carpets/size of house etc

edam · 12/09/2005 10:17

Every builder I've ever had round uses a Henry which I thought was a bit of a recommendation given how much plaster and mess they have to clear up. So I bought one and am very happy with it. Also have a Dyson (three story house; dh broke the hose so can't use it on the stairs) but it's not brilliant, tbh, and I wouldn't buy another one.

miele
they are vacuuming bliss.
Would never do a dyson again

sansouci · 12/09/2005 10:21

our next will definitely be a Miele. pricey but well worth it.

fastasleep · 12/09/2005 10:24

Don't get another Dyson! My mum bought one for us one Christmas... I used it like three times before it started to whistle oddly and it's never been the same since! We've had it looked at and everything ... I would definately go for a bagless one though...

zippitippitoes · 12/09/2005 10:26

I had a Miele for years but exh kept it and I got a henry which i think is much better

I think you can use it without the bags too

Nemo1977 · 12/09/2005 10:26

Also a dyson fan..we have the dyson animal and lurveeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee it.

bonym · 12/09/2005 10:28

We need a new one and I checked out the WHICH report before buying - this Miele came out top overall so I have ordered it. Not arrived yet though so can't tell you how good/bad it is yet!

bonym · 12/09/2005 10:29

Actually - seeing Nemo's post, I think the Dyson animal was marginallly better but was also £100 dearer .

Nemo1977 · 12/09/2005 10:31

bonym i am lucky as dh works for comet so got a staff discount

highlander · 13/09/2005 08:06

My Miele Cat and Dog is the best thing I've ever bought. I can't beleive how much it sucks up

starshaker · 13/09/2005 08:12

also have a dyson animal its great love it dont want any other. just need to convince dp we need a dog to make full use lol

triceratops · 13/09/2005 08:16

I have a Miele and I love it. It is so quiet and light after a dyson.

Janh · 13/09/2005 09:51

Get a Miele from Hughes Direct and you should get it tomorrow (they use CityLink)

Cheapish too. I have the black S571, it is fab. (hunker and gobbledigook have it too) (not the same one!)

SleepySuzy · 13/09/2005 09:52

The cheapest ones are out of stock

SecondhandRose · 13/09/2005 09:54

Mumbo, before you sling it take all the pipes off that you can and unravel a wire coat hanger and poke it up the pipes. You'll probably find your problem is a blockage. Also either change the filters or give them a good bashing to get out the dust. I had two in my Dyson 'graveyard' and a friend came round and sorted them both out so I now have 3 working!

bonym · 13/09/2005 10:55

Ooh - my Miele S571 is arriving tomorrow! Glad to know that it's all it's cracked up to be Janh!

mumbojumbo · 13/09/2005 16:13

Damn!

I took the Dyson apart this morning and found a huge blockage of dirt/paper underneath the roller which might explain why it was blowing instead of sucking! .

Thank you for all your feedback and comments. I hope to talk dh into getting a replacement anyway and I had kind of got my hopes up for a new vac (I really should get out more!)

Now, if only I could stop my laptop from falling over on a regular basis - now that is serious!

Miele S571 - on the very good authority of JanH! I love it.

Dysons are very poor ime.

bonym · 14/09/2005 14:31

My S571 arrived this morning and IT IS FAB!! My carpets have never looked so clean .

koalabear · 14/09/2005 14:33

I love my Henry - got him after too many "good" vacuums failed the "dog hair" test (we've got a border collie). Henry is fantastic.

princesspeahead · 14/09/2005 14:33

miele cat and dog. brilliant

bundle · 14/09/2005 14:35

we have a miele too, but not cat & dog.
