The ergo or the patapum for a non-framed carrier. Very light, compact and most importantly - comfortable! Try:

I have a bush baby and it's fantastic. Got it when DS was 11 months and still use it on long walks when he gets tired (he's 2.8 now) Website is www.bush-baby.com

The back length is fully adjustable - this is vtal especially if you're short!

There is a list of recommended carriers on mumsnet

The Vaude Jollie is far and away the best back carrier I have ever used. I've tried others (Karrimor etc) and Vaude is the most comfortable by a really long way. I carry my kids beyond the age of 2 in it which I could never do with a lesser carrier.
They're a bit pricey new, (£120ish) but I've just bought one for my sister on ebay for £25.

The ergo is the most comfortable carrier I have ever tried, I started using mine when ds was 5 months, and still use it now at 2yrs,3months. Even my podgy niece had a ride in it today and she is 4 yrs old, I still felt comfy even though shes quite heavy now.
