Tell me about eternity rings

Am I correct in thinking one is presented with an eternity ring on the birth of their child by the partner?? Yea or no.
A guy I work with is soon to be a father and asked me what I thought would be a nice present to give his partner, I thought eternity ring, but am unsure if I've got the right idea or not.

There was a thread not so long ago when someone was showing off their eternity ring (and every nice it was too). I think some people said then that an eternity rign is traditionally given on the birth of a first child.

Hmmm My dh missed that!

Nik72 · 08/09/2005 16:42

Oooh, yes. Definitely. Some men seem unaware of this tradition & it's only fair to enlighten them.

Lonelymum · 08/09/2005 16:43

here

dillydally · 08/09/2005 16:48

very very lucky ladies get them on the birth of their first child
they should be encrusted with as many diamonds as it is feasible to have on one ring

i do not have one and am envious and bitter

Thanks

jessicaandbumpsmummy · 08/09/2005 16:53

i got mine when pregnant with jess because i wanted to choose it. dont wear it mind - much too nice!

Then again - i cant remember the last time i wore my wedding ring or engagement ring - pregnancy fat fingers and the heat dont mix!

fuzzywuzzy · 08/09/2005 17:22

Ooooh good.
This part will probably sound inredibly snobby, however, said father to be bought his fiancee an engagement ring a while back....from H Samuel!!! I told him he could do better than that for the mother of his child, and he should shop somewhere a tad more up market for the eternity ring.... NB All suggestions of places to shop welcome.

Most people i know around here - got an eternity ring before an engagement ring - so we followed on that basis.

SoupDragon · 08/09/2005 17:26

You can give an enternity ring whenever you like. My dad gave my mum hers when they were signing the register at their wedding

I persuaded my DH it was traditional to have a maternity ring on the birth of our first child. And tried on the birth of our second one too. I got the first but ended up buying a second identical ring for DS2s birth from my own redundancy money - I don't wear them with my wedding/engagement rings though, have them both on the same finger on the other hand

If you're suggesting he buy one for his wife then it may be best for him to wait til her fingers aren't so fat. He could present her with an IOU slip.
