name tags and second child guilt

dd1 started the school nursery two years ago, with much ado she had shiney shoes, sweet little pinafore (ok so you can only get so sweet when it comes to grey school pinafores but I did traipse round al the usual suspects (BHS, Woolys, M&S etc) to choose the nicest)and hand-sewn name tags. all done several weeks before she started (iirc). DD2 starts next week and has had precisely NO preparation. I'm such an evil mother that I will probably be running late that morning so I won;t be able to stand her on the doorstep to take that photo. actually I'm not that eveil. I WILL take that photo. Anyway I digress. Name tags. Are iron-on ones any good or do they all peel? can I got sew on ones delivered in about 24 hours?

Do you think any child in the whole word, anywhere, gives a toss about the quality of her name labels - and aren't they a new thing? I went to school in the 70s and nobody had name labels for anything. We survived! Use a marker pen and write her name!

hatstand · 07/09/2005 23:44

Who do you think I'm doing this for? This is about ME. I need sew on name tags to prove my mothering skills. Don't I?

If you want iron on labels I can recommend

this website.

We ordered last Wednesday at lunchtime, they arrived 1st class Thursday morning

aloha · 07/09/2005 23:47

Um, no?
Darling you are far too busy nurturing her emotionally and intellectually to bother about nametapes!

bensmum3 · 07/09/2005 23:49

We use a biro and write it on again when it washes off.

ionaming · 07/09/2005 23:51

Ditto, Bensmum3! Although I use a (supposedly washproof) fabric pen. Have got some name tapes somewhere but haven't got round to using 'em

QueenOfQuotes · 07/09/2005 23:51

how do you use a dark pen on dark socks???

ionaming · 07/09/2005 23:54

blimey.....socks? I just teach dd to put 'em inside her shoes when she takes 'em off & hope for the best

Carla · 07/09/2005 23:55

hatstand, I know exactly where you're at. With dd1 it was all hand sewn in name tapes. Then, when she went on her field trip and it was duvets, towels, pillowcases etc. it was iron on. Then, with poor dd2, 'cos they have the same initial, I just cut off the middle bit and ironed on the initial and our surname.

Tippex pen, QoQ.

hatstand, I ordered 144 Cash's labels for DD1, 72 for D2 and (I think) 48 for DS1 - all in different colours - none at all for DS2 and most of the others are still in my sewing basket, what was I thinking of?

Use laundry/permanent marker (fine tip) in her labels. And of course you will have time to take a lovely pic, I have been doing it every September for 19 years (woman and girl )

QueenOfQuotes · 07/09/2005 23:55

anyhow, not sure why I'm asking - finished the rest of the iron on labels today while I was waiting for the (homemade) pizza to cook

Janh · 07/09/2005 23:56

(When I say sewing basket it is a basket with needles, thread, safety pins and Cash's labels in it, I don't sew anything)

ionaming · 07/09/2005 23:57

Carla, I very nearly ordered dd1's nametapes with just our surname (very unusual so wouldn't be any other kids with the same) on them so I could re-use for future siblings . Like your idea of chopping them down.....

hatstand · 07/09/2005 23:59

while we're on teh subject of second child guilt. It took me about 6 months to do dd1 an album of baby photos and congratulations cards. I am finishing dd2's as we (as it were) speak. dd2 is 3.

My mum got ours with

DB initial surname my initial

so that she could fold back the unwanted bit. How cheap is that

QueenOfQuotes · 08/09/2005 00:01

damn ion - why didn't I think of that - as far as we know we're the only ones in the country with our surname - grrrr

QueenOfQuotes · 08/09/2005 00:01

or I could have done JANH's one - initials - they've got the same first initial double grrrrrr

ionaming · 08/09/2005 00:05

Right, when a sibling comes along I'm gonna cut off dd's first name & use fabric pen to squeeze in a new initial in front of the surname! Fab!

Although I probably still won't get round to sewing any on anyway.......
