Would you (or has anyone) buy (bought) a CAR from e-bay?

Just interested/nosy, as, it is a possible option (in terms of cost) for us to be able to afford.

Good stories??
.. or
Bad?

We did two weeks ago - a Renault Scenic
We saw it on E-bay then realised that the seller was only 30 minutes away from us so my DH contacted him and arranged a viewing for the next day - so it wasnt strictly done through E - bay in the end.
But we were intending on buying one through E-bay. I think your bid is only subject to your being happy with the car once you have viewed it

DP bought an old banger. He's always lookin at cars on there. And your bid is legally binding, so make sure you view first.

I sold our old car on Ebay, put it on as a joke really as it had no mot,and needed quite a bit of work to make it road worthy, but it was a free listing day so I put it on.
The man who bought it was really pleased, as he bought it for spares, probably saved him a fortune, and it saved us the trouble of having to scrap it. As long as you ask lots of questions and the seller is honest you should be ok I would think.

A friend of mine bought one - apparently quite good. But the seller lived pretty locally and they had it checked out by the AA before they paid for it. I think you do have the option to withdraw if it isn't quite what you thought!

I don't think DH and I would be so brave though. We know nothing about cars.

My friend bought an old Mercedes on ~Ebay, its cool.

The same friend also rented a chalet in France for a ski week that turned out not to exist. Obviously didn't put him off though!

we have bought 2 on ebay.

one was a good "un", bought it for £300, sold it for £1250 was like kit car off knightrider, started up by remote control from 10ft away, great for scaring people lol

second was not good, we live in preston lancs, and dp travelled up to scotland to pick it up, ended up buying it, got about 10 min drive away and the engine blew the seller didnt want to know so ended up paying for a car, that would cost more than it was worth to fix.

We bought our car on ebay over a year ago for £230, brilliant buy, it's been very reliable (looks like a heap ofjunk though ). Just bought another one via ebay from someone we know of (in Arisaig, bensmum!), so hopefully it will be as good.

Don't want to worry you but my cousin's boyfriend sold her old Fiesta on ebay for far more than it was worth. It was a shed and needed £500 spending on it to keep it on the road, but as it still had some MOT left it looked better than it was. Then again the buyer must have been pretty gormless not to notice the terrible noise and smoke coming from the engine when he picked it up.

Having said that, as long as you ask loads of questions and view it before buying I can't see that buying on ebay is any different to buying from an ad in the paper.

I'd go for it and good luck.

bensmum3 · 07/09/2005 23:30

Miaou, I have a box of clothes for your ds and a few for dd's, if you are going to Arisaig, could I send it over on the boat ??please ring or email me. Sorry for quick hijack of this thread.

When I sold my car, I listed all its faults and scanned a copy of the last garage report, so the man who bought it knew exactly what he was getting, I was still amazed at how much he paid though.

Will do bensmum - it'll be next week sometime (Thursday I think)

bluesky · 09/09/2005 22:52

I've just seen this thread somewhere else, with ebay you cant see the car before you have bought it, (you are legally bound to buy the car). We found autotrader had huge choice and you see it before you hand over any money. We put our car on the autotrader website before trying the magazine and it worked! So people do use the internet but I think ebay can be a bit dodgy.

i asked earlier today.

My friend bought a car from ebay just last week...

she just got a cheep 'rum around' (about £500) as she haad written off her car and needs something while
a) she argues with insureres about payiing out the money
b) she chooses which car she wants!

She has had no problems (so far), would do it again, and it served the purpose of finding a cheep local car pretty much immediatly.

When she doesnt need it she plans to sell it to her brother for his first car!

Jbck · 10/09/2005 12:29

My BIL sold his on Ebay & it was a 12 grand Merc so not a run around, The buyer lived fairly locally and arranged to see it first. He brought cash & we were all thinking this could be forged or laundered or something but it all went smoothly.
DH bought a pick up thru Autotrader & got fleeced. Guy had a business doing up & selling on but they were ringers & very well done according to the Police when they came to impound it.
2 years on we're still trying to claim the AA for £8K (had it all checked out first to no avail) !!!!

biglips · 10/09/2005 12:34

We bought our Audi Estate from Ebay - we asked loads of questions to the seller and we didnt view it as it was too far away but once we won it we went all the way from liverpool to notts to view it and the seller agreed that if he didnt mention eg the wheel arch rusting then we could pull out but we found no fault on it whatsoever so we were lucky
