Sterilisers

My mum just bought me a second hand Avent steam steriliser, which is in good condition but looks a bit used. What's the best way to make sure it's totally clean and safe to use? I'm paranoid about dd getting germs and getting infections because her bottles aren't sterile properly. If I wash all the bits and then run it once, will that be enough to make sure it's safe?

You need to de-scale steam sterilers fairly regularly. I think you can buy the Avent sachets of descaler from Boots, or Boots do their own make for descaling their steam sterilisers. This ensures that it runs properly. HTH

The best thing to do is to wash all the bits and peices in v hot soay water and buy a citric acid sachet from Boots (in the baby section usually called steam sterilser descaler), that will make sure that the element is clean and will run efficiently. Finally give the sterilser a run with all the bits in and it should be fine.

Avent recommend descaling every 2-4 weeks depending on the quality of your domestic water supply (ie hard or soft)
