recommendations for sat nav??

hello,
am thinking of getting a sat nav, but no idea how to narrow the field. I am very directionally challenged, and get quite stressed about going to 'new' places that aren't local, as I worry I will get totally lost... so a sat nav might help as I have to do all the driving (DH can't) and DH has started doing lots of sporty things that he needs a lift to and from. Anyway, so which brands are good, or indeed models? I also would like to spend as little as possible!
Is is OK to buy 2nd hand??
ta!

Garmin and TomTom are the big brands.

We recently bought a Garmin Nuvi 1240, which is a superseded model, so it's under £100, eg. £82.98 from Amazon.

It's pretty easy to use, it comes with maps for most of Western Europe and a free map upgrade to the current map version.

The major disadvantage of 2nd hand sat navs is that the maps are out of date. As map updates are £50 a time on Garmin, you won't save much if up to date maps matter to you.
