Car for new (young) driver

My DS is taking his test next year and I will be buying his first car (he will be paying for the insurance). I need to start saving but don't know how much to budget and which cars to look at. Maybe I should chose car first then budget. I would imagine around £3000 will be what I can afford.

So what cars should I be looking out for and what is insurance likely to cost?

Can anyone help please?

This may be useful (put in your own postcode).

You don't want a too big engine because that will just increase insurance. It depends on circumstances but I know a 17 year old lad whose parents are paying £2,500 for his insurance annually.
