i just got them for my dd turning 1 past friday and i am really worried if she rips them or chews corners out of them . they are not cheap. so i have been apprehensive about giving her the toy on her own.

YES, lots of times. DS had one for his 4th birthday and he has always been fine with them but ds2 and dd have broken them in the past.

Sorry, just re-read your post and we have had leap-pad not leap-frog, I don't know if there is a difference.

The books have never been a problem, but my ds's first leappad only lasted a few months. Although admittingly he did have this habit of holding it by the pen.
