Stairgates to fit round handrail

Hello,
Has anyone bought a good stairgate that fits around a handrail on their stairs, our handrail is on the opposite wall to the bannister and sticks out too much for the stairgate to fit above or below it and is curved so the stairgate can't fit onto it - any ideas? I heard about some stairgates having extension pieces - how do they work?

Yes you can get y-shaped extender thingies for curved bannisters or stair rails.

Or sometimes you have to cut the handrail, if that's an option.
