Boxes for moving - where do you get them?

We are supposed to be moving Sept/Oct and I am just looking into boxes to put all of our stuff in. I have decluttered as much as I can and sold on Ebay.

We are moving ourselves with the help of family and hiring a van.

What did you all do? Where can I buy/obtain boxes from? Does anyone have any they don't need?

We are moving from a large two bedroomed house.

Supermarkets are always good to get them from or charity shops.

calebsmummy · 19/08/2005 17:54

I was going to ask the same thing today!!! We are moving in a couple of weeks and I haven't packed a single thing Didn't have a clue where to get boxes from, but I do now - Thank you!!

laughorcry · 19/08/2005 17:54

Argos ones are most best.

And fairly cheap. Otherwise anywhere which provides storage and most stationery shops.

alison222 · 19/08/2005 18:18

moving companies will provide them but I don't know if they do it without you moving - for a fee of course
soewhere like Majestic wine or an off licence as their boxes are strong.

Do any of you live near hampshire because I am moving house next Friday so will have loads of boxes free?

QueenOfQuotes · 19/08/2005 18:42

Try your local supermarket - if they don't have much in, ask when their delivery times are - and then ask if you can come back then.

For books and heavy stuff (which require smaller boxes) try your local corner shop.

oooggs · 19/08/2005 18:45

Wish I did live near Hampshire cos your free boxes would have been greatly appriciated. Thank you. Bit too far to travel from Cornwall

You can buy them from Ikea and from self storage companies. Have a look at Big Yelllow Self Storage or similar companies.

Bad luck oooggs. I did only pay 99p each for mine plus £5.00 delivery fee. I ordered them Sunday from ebay and got them Monday. They are all big ones too. very hand indeed.

We've moved several times, and my parents have moved 25 times since they got married 33yrs ago - and we've never paid for boxes

evesmama · 19/08/2005 20:20

The great big canvas/plastic laundry bags (the red, blue or black check ones you get from cheapo shops) are really handy for moving because you can get loads of stuff in, and they have got handles for carrying.

carboard veg trays from the supermarkets are great for books because they are easy to carry and stack when loaded but not too heavy to carry.

evesmama · 20/08/2005 18:40

middlesbrough

evesmama · 20/08/2005 18:41

Do you know any companies who are having new equipment delivered?

Last time we moved, I was contracting for a company who updated their PCs, so I got loads of Dell boxes, which were large and strong.

Only trouble was after we moved, when the local tip argued they were trade waste, and wouldn't take them.

evesmama · 20/08/2005 18:48

break em down and turn em inside out then tape together..they're not going to go to all the trouble of unpacking them..so should get away with it???
