How effective is it? I had sex for the first time in ages, with someone new. We didn't use any protection - I went along with it, caught up in the moment etc I know pretty stupid. He pulled out, I'm know it's not 100% effective but really what are the chances of pregancy?! Checked my cycle and it's slap bang when I should be ovulating.

I really like him, but we've only been dating a month. My feeling is that it wouldn't be the end of the world (as it would be if I was 16 or something!) as am nearing 40, already have a child and this guy so far seems decent, we also had a brief chat about kids and he said he was keen to have more (although not after only 6 dates I'm sure).

I personally wouldn't rely on it due to the chance of sperm in the pre cum

The men I have casual sex with I make sure there is some form of contraception. Not worth the risk.

GigiAnnna · 22/06/2025 15:44

It's worked for me in the past in that I've only fell pregnant when I wanted to, however that was when I wasn't fully against having another baby and would have been happy to go ahead with a pregnancy. It's probably unlikely you're pregnant if he pulled out totally but not impossible. If you want to be pregnant then that's up to you. If he's strongly against getting you pregnant he should be wearing a condom.

I’ve also used for years when another pregnancy would have been a happy surprise.

MsDDxx · 22/06/2025 17:14

We used it for years (10+) successfully.

But then we needed IVF 😆

Get the morning after pill from your pharmacy.

Tulipssndturkeys · 22/06/2025 21:16

Condoms are a cheep and effective method - why risk things ?

3luckystars · 22/06/2025 21:28

You are at a high risk of being pregnant and/or getting an STD. That was really risky.

I read a book about this before called sperm wars and if I remember correctly you are at a even higher risk with a new partner, there are lots of different types of sperm and there is a higher percentage of the ones needed for really swimming hard and beating off any opponents when it’s with someone that’s not a regular partner: I hope that makes sense.

You seriously would have a baby with someone you just met? That’s really risky!!

Good luck whatever you do x

Thinking more clearly today - have taken the morning after pill!!

You need to take the MAP now IMHO.
