Erotic Fairy Tale?

Did anyone else know the classic fairytale of Jack and the bean stalk is an erotic coming of age story?

I was recently discussing online erotica with a friend over coffee and I was surprised to learn this!
I didn't believe her at first but I searched and soon realized it was dissected by the likes of Freud and other psychologists.

Basically the mighty 'bean stalk' represents his growing penis! It seems obvious once pointed out but It never dawned on me before now.

And the 'magic beans' represent Jack's seed and the onset of fertility.

In contrast the old cow sent to market represents his aging mum whose milk has dried up.

It's full of dark erotic Freudian innuendos e.g. Jack comes home and spills his 'magic beans' in her hand and planting it in her 'garden' etc

Climbing it to the top represents the ascent to climax as the mighty 'bean stalk' rumbles...

Needless to say it's a very Freudian take on the male psychology and the mother figure role. Major Mommy Issues Lol!

Hard to look at it the same way now!

Would you still read it to your boys?

This has certainly sparked an interesting debate, I posted earlier basically suggesting I didn’t agree with the OP point which I don’t, I also strongly oppose anything which sexualises children, however the opposition to things like discussing the female and male anatomy is different, I post on other threads, books, houses mental health etc so would like to think I am not some sex obsessed male, however the posts are here to generate discussion, maybe not this post, but ones about what people think of their or the opposite sex anatomy, mostly they are posted by women and, perhaps I’m wrong here, but seem to suggest some insecurities about how they look, I’d like to think the answers from both sexes generally try to say most people don’t care and give some reassurance but hey, I’m a male so obviously just a perv

lolachic · 13/05/2023 11:32

It's not about sexualizing children. Nobody wants to discuss that.
It's whether it would put you off reading it to them if you saw a darker side to the story

You’re sexualising a fairy tale and asking people if they would still read it to their children.
You also have a post about your son or his friends stealing your ‘panties’ and mentioning being aroused.

Yep amongst other dodgy posts. I actually find this sort of thing very offensive and it spoils this board for the genuine posters.

You think you're wrong? I don't know I just commented on the subject.

I've know idea about the OPs intentions but the thread has been reported so MNHQ can decide.

I do find it interesting that many folk tales, nursery rhymes etc have very dark roots yet we tell them to our children.

I don't think it's harmful, many adults let alone the children don't understand the context in which they were written so the tale of the dangers of a murderous Catholic monarch becomes a sweet little ditty to recite

This whole board is full of pervs. Blokes talking about their big cocks and which vulvas they like best. It's so bloody seedy.

Someone is resurrecting old threads.

Original fairy tales are very unpleasant. Definitely not bedtime stories .

Paperlate · 13/05/2023 18:20

Pointless reporting the sleazy blokes who resurrect old threads though. Anything goes on this board.

Mermaidparades · 13/05/2023 22:14

My DD recently found out the truth behind some of the fairy tales and nursery rhymes and was horrified! She couldn’t believe they’re being read/ sing to innocent children!

Also, please @Paperlate don’t generalise that everyone on the board is a ‘perv’. Report any issues you have to MNHQ.

There's no point. MNHQ rarely delete anything from this board. They only delete posts that disagree with the clique.

Mermaidparades · 13/05/2023 23:04

@Paperlate i don’t believe there is a clique here. And even if there was, why would MN pander to it?

There is a clique and you tell me why they pander to it? The clique report anyone who disagrees with their mates. It's blatantly obvious you think it's your topic. I will no doubt be reported and deleted for this comment.

Mermaidparades · 13/05/2023 23:20

@Paperlate I don’t think this is my topic, we’re all just posters here!

Stop @ me please. It's annoying.

Fair enough!

I very much doubt that MNHQ deleted posts because they are reported by whatever clique.

They delete them or not because of MN guidelines whoever reports them.

I don't always agree with their decisions but it's their forum and they can see posters full history so their decisions are better informed than yours or mine.

Back on topic did you know that 3 blind mice is about protestant bishops who were burned at the stake?

climpybab · 14/05/2023 08:31

That article tells you not a lot!

But most of them are obvious - I'm not sure about rumplestiltskin

AnneKipankitoo · 14/05/2023 09:47

I am sure there are more erudite analyses.

Catullus5 · 14/05/2023 10:37

Marina Warner writes very well on this stuff.

Also, not academic, but Angela Carter has done some good rewrites of the stories themselves.

Personally I prefer to leave, rather than take, the Freudian analyses that some people read into these stories. I got read loads of Grimms tales as a child - some like Fitcher's Feathered Bird are a bit gruesome but I liked them.

AnneKipankitoo · 14/05/2023 10:50

That might have been a pointless answer on “Pointless” recently @Catullus5

Catullus5 · 14/05/2023 10:53

I hope not.

I tend to forget anything I know that becomes useful in any way.
