Cane

Dh bought a leather riding crop we haven't used yet.
I quite fancy a school style cane too - I've googled but not sure whether to get rattan or bamboo. Does anyone have experience? How do each of these feel and/or mark the skin?
Also, was hoping to spend under £20 - some huge variance in prices....

Would a wooden ruler not work in a similar way?

I don't think so. I've found a couple of sites explaining. Apparently, schools used dragon canes, and I need a junior one for beginners!

Dragon rattan is the best by far but they are expensive - like forty quid. But if you're going to get into it it's probably worth the investment. They are better because they don't splinter and are very flexible. If you shortern your cane (which most people do) make sure you sand the cut end to a smooth finish. As for marking the skin it all depends, some people mark easily some don't, also depends on how hard you are being caned of course.
Have fun !

I've bought a kooboo can - 80cm. Is that too long?

A cane will be a much sharper, stinging pain than a leather whip and is more likely to leave welts. Build up slowly with it.

There's not much difference in quality from different retailers. It's just a bamboo cane after all! 80cm will be fine.

They do tend to splinter if you go really hard with them. I've broken 3 so far! 😂

I have made my own riding crop, using as its core a carbon fibre rod. Unlike glass fibre rods, it isn't prone to shattering or splintering. It is wrapped in paracord and is beautiful to use.

Making one's own BDSM equipment is a very rewarding pastime. It may be worth exploring making canes.

I would say 80cm is fine but if whoever is using it prefers it shorter they can either simply hold it further down or you can use a tenon saw and cut it, just remember my original advice to sand the cut end to a smooth dome or it can be very sharp. Also agree with PinotPony that a cane is an intense, sharp pain which can leave welts or even drawer blood - definitely build up slowly.
