Butt plugs - where to start?

I’ve been wondering about getting one of these - not done any anal play before, but this seems a good way to start. Lovehoney has loads, and I can’t decide what sort to go for. Metal? Silicone?
If anyone has any experience of buying or using one, I’d welcome any tips.

I started out with the 3 pack of silicone butt plugs from Lovehoney. I used lots of lube and incorporated the plug into masturbation, I moved up to the bigger size every couple of weeks (I think!) Take time to relax and fully experience the sensations. This set isn’t very expensive so it’s not a huge loss if it isn’t for you!

Once I felt confident using a plug solo i then asked my partner to insert it for me, this eventually led on to anal sex. Take it at your own pace. I enjoy the feeling of ‘fullness’ so was happy to move up through the 3 plugs and intend to get a larger one but stop at the first if that suits your body.

That’s really helpful, thank you. I had assumed I’d be getting my partner to insert it first, but maybe best to practice solo?

It’s entirely up to you! I wasn’t sure if I would like it and I wanted to experiment and truly feel the sensations without any distractions.

@BambooForDinnerAgain I concur with@Mermaidparades take it easy and take your time, I would personally go for more of the rigid type, neck wise.

Experimenting by myself before discussing it with my DW then sharing how it went was one of the bravest things I'd done to that point(DW's words).

Lube, lube, lube, lube, lube and maybe start just with no plug(fingers) and explore in a relaxing environment like a hot bath with a bit of your usual play and take it from there.

I know I'm a guy so hope my twopenneth is in some way helpful but it's been an amazing step forward for both of us and our exploration of an area we hadn't really touched on to that point.

I'd definitely say start with silicone rather than glass or metal. And start small. I'm sure big and rigid works for some, but as much as I like using one, I found my comfort point fairly quickly. I've seen sets with different sizes sold as "anal training sets" - I have no reason to think rhe scaremongering are right or wrong, but I feel no need to damage myself.

And I think the case for lube is a little overstated. Lube is important, but I don't find you need lots or expensive anal lube. Your body will tell you if you need more.

Definitely agree about starting on your own. Remove it in rhe bathroom - there shouldn't be a lot of mess, but ... well ... y'know ...

And if you want to move on to play with a partner, invest in an anal douce.

No worries!! Be sure to read up on how to insert the plug correctly to ensure minimal discomfort. There’s 2 sets iof sphincters in the anus and by pushing out (like when going to the toilet) while pushing the plug in you will get through the internal one easily. Sorry, my description isn’t great, have a Google!!

Definitely go for a metal one I think, be very gentle or get your partner to be very careful when inserting, lube if required, easy does It, but this is one of the most erotic things I've ever done with a partner, both inserting, carefully listening to her instructions, and enjoying her enjoyment both passively, and then knowing we were having sex whilst the plug was simultaneously inside her. Have fun, either alone, or with someone.

Scratch the metal, start with silicone, work your way up, as others have suggested.

Small metal one, 2" for show, during sex. A silicone flexible, 3" if you're walking out and about. Try those, then try others.
