Antidepressants/Orgasm

Has anyone found an antidepressant they can achieve an orgasm on please?

I was taking them many years ago, they helped mood and MH wise however completely stopped my ability to orgasm so I made the decision to come off them. Feeling overwhelmed and like it’s time many years later to try them again but worried they’ll have the same effect.

I was taking sertraline.

I take fluoxetine and they work fine for me.

I have been on setraline over a year and yes definitely affects me unfortunately, I’m reducing down gradually, hoping this helps. My body knows what it wants to do but just won’t get there if that makes sense. I spoke to GP who wasn’t interested, just said oh well that’s a side effect, not helpful!

Pippa12 · 26/02/2023 20:52

I stopped taking fluoxetine for this very reason- even on just 10mg and I couldn’t get there even with my very attentive and patient DH. I felt my mood was much better on ADs but my libido was rock bottom which was just a new mental torment!

Thank you everyone. Yes I agree, it’s just another hill to climb when you already have no legs, I don’t think I have the strength to start on them again when this is a side effect, for some it might be ok and tolerable but for me it definitely isn’t unfortunately.

Like @millymoo1202 i practically got laughed out the drs office and a nurse just thought I was a pervert at the mention of it (I’m a married mum of 3 young kids so not some dirty old man, it felt very odd and unapproachable).

I'm on citalopram and it's fine (a fairly low dose though)...

noimaginationforausername · 27/02/2023 13:23

I'm on 30mg of Citalopram and whilst I can orgasm it takes forever, so long sometimes that I just can't be arsed!

Try and see a prescribing psychiatrist if you can

lauraUK1000 · 27/02/2023 17:24

My DH has been on Sertraline 50mg for about a year now and found after about 3 months that he doesn't get to his orgasm and 'cum' anymore. Doctors have said this is a common side effect and could try something else but unless it is really a big issue to stay on current meds.

Thinking positively, he can now go as long as he wants or I need, rather than finishing too quickly and he's also found the he doesn't get the urge or need to masturbate anymore.

I took fluoxetine. Killed by sex drive stone dead and killed my ability to orgasm. Even months afterwards the effects seemed to linger.

AbsolutePixels · 05/03/2023 14:09

There's one called Buproprion that actually enhances sexual function. Problem is that it's only available in the UK on a short term basis as an aid to smoking cessation. In the US it is frequently prescribed as an antidepressant.

If you are female and 40+ you might be better off trying hrt and seeing if that lifts your mood
