Wife won’t contemplate using lube, thinks it’s for old people, thinking about buying some and just seeing what happens, what do people think about using lube

This thread is quite old now and inactive. If you've found this page in search of lubricants that have been tried and tested by fellow Mumsnet users, you might find our guide to the best lubes useful. Hope this helps! MNHQ 💐

Use it, use it, use it!!!

DeltaAlphaDelta79 · 12/12/2022 12:24

Try flavoured/tingling lube from lovehoney or Ann Summers. It much better than the bog standard stuff, but then we have it for toys and stuff as well as PIV sex.

Rieslinger · 12/12/2022 14:27

Also different types/brands provide differing sensations, I find water based gives the best sensation however it can need warming up whereas you never have that problem with silicone.

So the first one is my ultimate favourite and the second is the one that doesn't make my wife jump out of her skin cos it's cold.

Side note my wife wasn't convinced at first but checks I've packed it when we go on holiday now!

But never use oil based lube with some toys as it will melt them.

MagpieCounting · 12/12/2022 18:26

Highly recommend yesyesyes.org - natural oil and water based lube. No nasties, good for the skin and doesn't taste horrible.

cheshirebloke · 13/12/2022 11:17

I've never found a need for it for regular sex. Never known a partner who's not got naturally wet enough (usually have the opposite problem) with appropriate foreplay. Is it possible that your DP is hinting that she'd prefer more foreplay to just reaching for the lube instead?

HellsBells87 · 13/12/2022 12:51

I don't need it for sex, I get wet enough. I only use it for toys that I can't get in easily.

Rieslinger · 13/12/2022 14:02

As you get older things change and if you are one of the lucky few that never needs it, brilliant, just be open in case like with the rest of us it keeps the wheels turning.

Hijinks75 · 13/12/2022 19:44

Fairly sure we have plenty foreplay,

Assuming you are not using condoms or "rubbery" toys I'd strong recommend coconut oil.

It last longer than water based lube and doesn't feel claggy like other non,-water lubes.

It also tastes nice and natural.

mm40 · 29/12/2022 17:48

Silk lubricant - just Google it. It is amazing

Zanatdy · 29/12/2022 21:26

Oh I love it, we used to use it with my ex partner and it’s definitely not for old people. Get some kind of themed one if she’s concerned - I don’t know some kind of tingling one etc

Hijinks75 · 30/12/2022 19:05

Night away soon, bought some that says it’s for general massage use too so just going to try and massage it into the interesting bits

If you feel you would benefit from it, use it. We vary from being moister and dryer as part of our cycle. Go for what works for you.

CousinKrispy · 31/12/2022 23:50

It sounds like your wife could do with reassurance that it's not just for old people (it's not). Is it possible she's feeling like you're criticising her a bit by suggesting lube, like you're suggesting she's not getting wet enough or it's not pleasurable for you? Make sure she feels reassured about why you are doing it.

eve39 · 07/02/2023 17:53

Completely agree! It's such a shame so many people think lube is for people that "need it" if they are dry or whatever, but actually it just makes everything SO much more pleasurable. Also think it used to be embarrassing to buy those bright bottles of durex lube or carry them in your liquids when travelling lol but now so many discrete lubes on the shelves! Has anyone tried Maude organic lube? I've heard good things but haven't used an "organic" lube before...

Rieslinger · 08/02/2023 09:16

Sliquid have an organic lube, it was the first we bought and in my opinion the best.

Judeisnotobscure · 08/02/2023 11:16

Sliquid is vegan friendly too, if that’s a consideration you need to take into account

user1501270679 · 08/02/2023 15:56

Lube is great. Liquid silk lube has made many things much, much better for us and they weren't bad before. Also available via Love Honey and other outlets.

Rieslinger · 09/02/2023 09:26

I find different lubes can have different impacts on sensation. ID silicone is great but Sliquid is the best IMHO.

Get a few small bottles and try them out?

IwasToldThereWouldBeCake · 09/02/2023 09:30

Love lube, it's amazing, go fora plant based one, not synthetic, it's awesome.

Upfartooearly · 09/02/2023 09:36

Just to bring a downer to the party but I found I ended up with thrush with certain lubes and discovered it was likely to be the glycerine. After trying several different brands that were glycerine free but still caused a reaction, switched to YesYesYes Water Based and have no problems now.
