Ok, so as not to dripfeed I will do this quickly.
Together 26 years
2 grown kids
Ok ( I think) until his affair 5 years ago
After lots of heartache, shit, split for 6 months, reconciliation, talking, therapy, setbacks, bad mental health ( mine, I didn't trust him)
We have been actually close and kinder to each other than ever
Went for a fam get together last week which involved me and DH staying in a Travel Lodge one night. We both showered together before meeting fam for a meal. Fast forward later we started to have oral, him going down on me first then as I was coming we usually do him. This time, and the only time I have had this in 26 years I actually gagged. He had a really strong smell & taste of ....I'm sorry tmi ...fish. I know it can be that way after sex and am worldly wise. But! We both showered early that evening, I was clean and fresh.
I fully expected him to be when I went down on him because we had both showered earlier.
It's NEVER happened before, he has always been clean, fresh smell etc
It smelt like he has had sex and not washed for a week and I know that wasn't the case because we showered together.

Diet? What had he eaten in the last day or so? It can make a huge difference. He needs to avoid asparagus, certain spices, a proliferation of oily fish and a lot of onion.

Get him on regular strawberries, cranberry juice, pineapple juice and water melon, it makes a huge taste difference.

Most likely down to what he's eaten. Or it just might be that he didn't wash himself very thoroughly when he showered. Was he in a rush?

This can happen to anyone. If it was right after showering - then it’d be down to not waking well.
But you said you went out for a meal, so he may have been warm in whatever he wore, plus had eaten smth that changed his smell.

It sounds like a UTI or an STD. Mention it to him and ask him to get checked out, avoid sex until you know what it is.

Men can smell like that if they have not washed their bell end properly - stale week and semen (from sex or masturbation) goes like that and if it has been there for sometime, it can be difficult to wash away (especially if no soap or shower gel used).
Having said that, some vaginas smell that way - so could be that he had a shag that night
