I have had partners that it would be a complete no-no,
And others that would make the right noises when fingers and tongue were around the area.

Feels like there's still a little bit of a taboo about men to admit we enjoy it but it is a v sensitive spot and a finger there combined with oral or intercourse really heightens the sensation.

Felt pretty awkward and embarrassed asking my wife to do this only for her to ask why I didn't share this with her before.

Very arousing. We try not to overdo it, but my wife often uses it on me. I can't help but suspect that men who claim not to like it have a preconception that anal play is "wrong" or only for gay men.
The reverse is that my wife does like to have her ass fingered when I am fucking her. It took me a while to pluck up the courage to do it (sorry not very adventurous) but the first time I did she came immediately - it was as though I had pressed a button.
Now it's more variable - if she's in the right mood it works really well, at other times it doesn't do so much for her. As a result (and similar to her on me), I try not to overuse it.

Until you get as far as the prostate, as I understand it, there's little anatomical differences between male and female bums. Lots of nerve endings to be stimulated. Some like it. Some don't. I think there's still a strong cultural narrative that says men who like anal are gay and women who like it are sluts and in both cases that is used as an attack.
