Is it normal to tense up before orgasm?

I had a long practically sexless marriage, and more or less gave up on all things sexual - thought I'd come to terms with never having sex again.

Marriage is over now, and I've been seeing someone for almost a year who has shown me what I've been missing - I really can't believe I've come to this so relatively late in life. I never really orgasmed when married, so it's been a wonderful learning curve. But I find when I'm approaching orgasm I almost clench or tense up. Is that normal? I do orgasm but it's over relatively quickly and I feel that I could feel it more intensely if I could just let go somehow.

I've been experimenting with a vibrator (God how times have changed!) and trying to let go, but I seem to have the same reaction there. Is this how it is for most people or is there something I can do to teach myself to let go?

Thank you in advance.

You're probably holding your breath or tensing your jaw, I do that, I have to make myself breathe and unclench. It takes a little longer to get there but it's much longer lasting.

relaxed orgasms are much better
you don't have to be tense

Just remember "normal" isn't really a thing! Everyone's bodies are different and respond to different things. The main thing is to have fun!
