Used to do it to an ex. Middle finger, lube if necessary, about 2-3cm up, have a gentle play around Wink I found making a small circular movement effective.
This would make him come extremely hard, though not a patch on SleepingTiger's experience...I need to learn how to do that.

This is something I've recently tried with my wife as a compromise to her using a plug during sex. And I must say it was a really really pleasurable experience.
So to answer your question OP

No it doesn't hurt one bit, make sure you turn him on properly first it really helped relax me.
Use lots of lube on both your finger and his anus, my wife used middle finger as obsidian77 suggested, so around 2-3 inches inside towards the front wall you'll feel a wallnut type sponge! This is where you have to massage. No small circular motions to start with but your DP will be able to tell you what feels good!

my wife wore a glove bough from local chemist! And I can bet what people must think it might take away from the experience but it really didn't, she had same reservation so we decided that was best for both worlds. Since then we've tried it after I'd been to the loo an hour before and a shower pre activity.. And it was clean. But glove isn't a bad idea!
