Can anyone enlighten me on the following.

If a guy gives a girl oral sex, who is at risk of catching a STI, guy, girl or both?

Both to each question!

It's very very unlikely and unusual to catch an STI from either fellatio or cunnilingus. But where it's possible it can happen both ways.

Use condom or dental dam if in any doubt.

Thank you so much for your reply. I'm not doubting your advice in any way but most of the information I've received from outside this site seems to suggest otherwise. Are you speaking as a medical professional or simply from personal experience.

I don't know what you've been looking at but just look at any nhs site and sexual health clinic and they will say the same!

Sorry Minime85, my last comment was aimed at 0phelia who says contracting STI's are very unlikely from oral sex. Most of the information I've received says STI's are indeed often passed by oral sex.

Herpes being one of the main ones, both can catch that. But also chlamydia, Gomorrah, HIV, genital wart.

Exchange of bodily fluids basically opens you up to a boast of isssues.

In my single days I'd only perform oral sex with a condom on, take it or leave it was my thinking.

There was a poster on mn the other day who got an sti from oral. There was a programme on channel 4 last week (unsafe sex in the city)about the sti clinic and the clinic advise using condoms for oral aswell as well as other sexual contacts/activities . Sti can be passed by mouth ulcers/coldsores/exposure to bodily fluids such as saliva/semen/cum (if the recipient has an sti).
