Memories from sex education at school

Not even sure where this memory popped up from but I remembered this today and it really made me laugh. When we were having sex education in about year 7/8, this girl put her hand up and said 'miss, do you have to put the willy in' The teacher's response was classic...... 'Well, sometimes it needs a bit of a helping hand, it's not a guiding missile' GrinGrin I've never forgotten that!

I did not have sex ed at school - early 80s. I learnt everything I needed to know from The Jackie.

As a science teacher, I have the joy of delivering those lessons.

kaitlinktm · 02/04/2016 23:37

I had to "deliver" them to my tutor group (Year 10) years ago - we sort of did a carousel of topics to do with PHSCE and I drew the short straw of sex ed.

One of the first things we had to do was get them all to say what words they used to describe various parts of the body as well as things like masturbation etc and write them on the board under the proper name for whatever it was. It was a bit of an eye opener and you had to make sure to clean the board double quick before Year 7 came in for next lesson. One time the head came in to ask me something before I'd had chance to do this. Her eyes nearly popped out of her head.

My favourite was "shaking hands with the one-eyed milkman". Grin

Nursey used to come in and demonstrate condoms - she had a model willy which was gynormous and must have give the lads inferiority complexes now I think about it.

Hawkmoth · 02/04/2016 23:40

Our biology teacher took the opportunity to share photos of STDs but went off topic with penis cancer and, most memorably, a close up of severe scabies, which is seared into my memory and makes my hair stand on end.

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 02/04/2016 23:45

As a nominally catholic child at a mixed denomination school, we had to go and sit with the priest when everyone else did sex ed Shock.

I think that must have changed by fifth year because I remember a massive row about consent with a boy in my year... But I don't remember any of the mechanics chat.

ouryve · 02/04/2016 23:48

I taught sex ed around the time of Blill Clinton's indiscretions. Certainly made the "Miss, what's a blow job?" question a lot easier!

Hawkmoth your biology teacher sounds like a bit of a loose canon, to be honest!

Most of year 10 probably know a lot of it already. The nitty gritty is a year 7 thing.

MilkTwoSugarsThanks · 02/04/2016 23:50

Sex ed when in yr6 (was actually 4th year of junior school - that's how old I am)

Best friend goes home, tells her mum all about it then says "YUCK! And you and dad had to do that twice!".

ouryve · 02/04/2016 23:52

cannon!

probably canon, too :D

Lonny - taught at 2 catholic schools. Even the less liberal one (because the governors wouldn't like anything untowards) simply steered against recommending contraception, abortion etc. The other one had a head of science with the less squeamish attitude of "fuck that, if they're going to do it, anyway, they need to know how to not get pregnant!".

CharleyFarleyy · 02/04/2016 23:55

We just watched a video, at the start of the video a naked (animated) man walked naked up to a mirror and as he looks in the mirror at himself his willy gets errected, I as a 12/13 year old girl had no idea that that even happened and I was really quite horrified by it Grin

Boogers · 03/04/2016 00:01

I went to a very strict catholic school and on my 16th birthday (I'm sure it was just coincidence!) we had an entire morning dedicated to assemblies and talks from Life and Fr McGuire about the evils of contraception and abortion, including a video of a vacuum aspirate abortion being performed. My RE teacher gave us the best advice after we were all forced to watch that video in assembly, that if we didn't want that to happen do something to prevent it, which was as much contraception advice as we were going to get in that school. Luckily my mother was a very open minded PSE teacher and I knew all about periods, puberty and contraception long before the nuns and priests tried to indoctrinate me. I was then, and still am, pro choice.

NotCitrus · 03/04/2016 00:06

In Y7 we had some books dating back at least 20 years to the late 60s. They began "Overleaf is a photograph of the male reproductive organs." And indeed, on the next page was a full-page photo of very hairy coco and balls!

We actually got three term of human reproduction in Science, plus an entire year of 'RE' on contraception. The main bit I remember is way too much about the teacher's sex life including the effect on her husband when he had a vasectomy. Met him at an end-of-term event when he asked what she had told us about him, and all I could think of was "apparently your penis bends to the left now"...

heavenlypink · 03/04/2016 00:09

Emm ..... Biological facts only

HowManyMoreTimes · 03/04/2016 00:23

We had sex ed as part of RE at the all girls school I went to (not Catholic) The time we discussed abortion we had an 'outside speaker' from Life who showed us photos of aborted foetuses and when asked would she accept the idea of a woman who had been raped seeking an abortion actually said it was impossible to get pregnant if you are raped Sad

Unicow · 03/04/2016 00:52

All I remember is dodgy drawings in an old textbook and all the boys being sent away and us girls got some tampons and towels which we may or may not have all unwrapped and waved at each other.

paxillin · 03/04/2016 01:55

We put condoms on relay batons supplied by the PE teacher.

Boogers · 03/04/2016 09:25

HowManyMoreTimes Life told our assembly that condoms did not prevent the spread of HIV as the virus could penetrate the latex! Shocking how they got away with peddling that crap! Confused

minniebear · 03/04/2016 09:31

We had to draw a close up of a pubic louse (big enough to fill an A4 sheet of paper), and it put me right off sex!

jimpam · 03/04/2016 09:39

We had to play "the vegetable game" where we used various vegetables & random objects to create sex organs. I remember using a courgette & walnuts for men & drinking straws & a baby sock for women. Very strange.
Also one very shy boy put up his hand & said "excuse me miss, but what is a butt-ock?" bless him.

Gowgirl · 03/04/2016 10:04

Our extremely shy very religous chem teacher got the honour of standing in front of 30 fifteen year olds asking stupid questions! Great fun was had by allGrin

Hamiltoes · 03/04/2016 10:09

Oh I still remember the song we got taught in P2 (aged 6).

^My bodys no bodys body but mine
You have your own body, let me have mine
My bodys mine from my head to my toes
Leave me alone when you hear me say NO^

So catchy Grin

YellowShockedFace · 03/04/2016 10:13

We got told the basics of it, the erm, ins and outs of it. Then a gruesome film of a lady delivering her baby. With close ups.
No discussion of emotions, no questions allowed Hmm Confused

DramaQueenofHighCs · 03/04/2016 10:42

My best memory was a joke the whole class played on our science teacher. (Who was taking us for sex ed) He was very young, looking back I'd say very early 20's, and in his first year of teaching. He was a lovely guy but couldn't really control the class and always had an annecdote about him and his girlfriend (he came in very upset one day because they'd had an argument.)
Anyway.....
At the start of the topic he said he was going to put a box at the front of the class and then the next lesson we could all anonymously put in questions we had about sex and puberty and he would answer them. So the class conspired together that we would all put in questions like 'how big is your dick sir?', 'Is it hairy?', 'Does your girlfriend like it rough?' Etc etc....
So we got to the lesson and put in our questions and we could see his face get redder and redder as he pulled each one out and read it! (About 5 questions in he found a sensible one - blimmin class swot!) After he had been through the whole lot and found them all to be personal he went totally APE - shouted so loud we thought he would explode!
Of course we all had our sensible questions to put in once he's calmed down too!

Caken · 03/04/2016 11:34

In year 5/6 learning about periods and watching an animated video showing the basics of the monthly cycle - womb lining building up and then shedding, there was a thud at the back of the class and a girl had fainted.

Then in year 9 one of the year heads used a banana to show us how to put a condom on, he totally fumbled it and we all loved it.

Awkward fun times. Grin

treaclesoda · 03/04/2016 11:37

We had zero sex education at school. Unless you count one very factual biology lesson as part of GCSE, but then if you weren't doing biology GCSE you wouldn't even have had that.

QueenLaBeefah · 03/04/2016 11:44

When I was 11yrs old the whole class had to watch a video of a family playing volleyball.......naked. That was the only sex ed we received.

Jackie and More magazine, however, were very informative.

mudandmayhem01 · 03/04/2016 11:48

I went to catholic school. Virtually no sex education, we had a very scary session by a mad anti abortion group with what I now know to be completely inaccurate pictures of foetuses, I was very upset, luckily my mum explained the reality of abortion and about a woman's right to choose.
Sex education consisted officially of the mechanics of human reproduction. Our brave biology teacher, said " this is the schools line on contraception, but I know how the teenage mind works and if you are going to have sex please use contraception and went through the main methods and how a teenager could get hold of them. He did ask us not to mention he had did this part of the lesson to other teachers. He was a good man and an inspiring teacher.
