Erotic reading material

I hesitated to call it literature Grin
Looking for some recommendations please for getting oneself in the mood. I recently acquired a copy of Lady Chatterly's Lover but spent most of the time snorting in amused derision at the writing style.
Fanny Hill was fun but is very male oriented.
I've heard vague murmurings on MN that 50 Shades may be slightly less than top notch.
So......?

Some people recommend Literotica. You have to sift through the male-centric dross though.

Personally, I prefer fanfiction. There is some superbly written smut out there. You just need a pairing.

HermioneWeasley · 25/07/2015 09:57

Agree with literotica and the more explicit fanfic

I also like Abigail Barnet/jenny armintrout, Lily Harlem, Emma Holly and Bella Andre (have to be selective with her stuff)

TheImminentGin · 25/07/2015 10:00

SaulGood I need a pairing?

Hermione I looked up Abigail Barnette, any suggestions on which series of books, there's vampire, the 'Lighterworld' or a third set?

Supernatural stuff isn't my bag. I'm not massively into bdsm porn either, but for Abigail Barnett I did enjoy "the boss" - I think she set out to rewrite 50 shades and show what a healthy, functional adult relationship is.

Emma holly does a lot of supernatural stuff as well, but I liked ménage, cooking up a storm and top of her game.

For lily Harlem, I've enjoyed the ice hockey series

TheImminentGin · 25/07/2015 10:37

Ok, that's fairly straightforward. Amazon will soon receive an order. But how does one access fanfic?

OP posts:
SaulGood · 25/07/2015 10:40

Well fanfic takes a known story from literature, film, television etc and writes more to their story. If you want to read erotica, you need to know who you want to be getting it on. So you might like to read about what Darcy did to Elizabeth to pollute the shades of Pemberley or wonder exactly what Rose and the Doctor got up to in the Tardis or fancy finding out what the French revolutionaries of Les Mis did while they weren't manning the barricades. If you search on something like Archive (AO3), you can filter by pairing, rating (you want explicit) and then also by kudos or bookmarks (if lots of people have saved it or rated it, then that's a good starting point).

People sneer at fanfic but there is some brilliant, well written, engaging work out there. Some novel length, some AU stuff for example (alternate universe where they take the pairing and stick them in a world different to the one you took them from so imagine Ms Bennett an aspiring journalist and Fitzwilliam Darcy, the grumpy newspaper owner- I'm making this up btw) and it can be really very good indeed. You have to know how or where to search though. Otherwise, Harry Potter will be ruined for you.

GinAndSonic · 25/07/2015 11:05

There is more gay Avengers fanfic than you can shake a stick at yes, ive heard that fanfic spans quite a wide range of tastes

glasgowlass · 25/07/2015 11:22

Watching with interest.

paintedfences · 25/07/2015 13:30

SaulGood WORD. Long time fanfic reader and writer here. What fandoms are you into?

TheImminentGin, AO3, or archiveofourown.com, is here. All you need to do is put your email address in and in the next day you'll get an email through to make an account. You CAN just go through here and access whatever isn't locked to members, but most of the best-written and higher-rated material is locked for members for broadly the same reasons the Sex board on mumsnet is hidden.

Any films/tv shows/books you thought the main characters had some UST (unresolved sexual tension)? Start there.

I would suggest when you go to a fandom you like, that you filter the results by comments (it's polite to write a comment telling the author if you liked the story) or by kudos (little button you click to say you liked the story) to find the longer or the best stuff. I've filtered the Sherlock fandom by comments here so you can see.

Actually, a few things you need to know - 'slash' fiction is one with a male/male pairing, femmeslash is female/female and 'het' is female/male. 'Gen' is no pairing at all, and then there are lots of different kinks etc.

Fanfiction is awesome, but as you'll see it's not really 'just' porn or erotica, there's everything from novel-length plotty romances, to short sharp character studies to kinky adventures. There'll definitely be something to float your boat - have fun!

SaulGood · 25/07/2015 14:41

I'm a reader and writer too. I flit between a few fandoms but am mostly found lurking in Sherlock, Dr Who, Les Mis, Supernatural and Merlin. I have a few OTPs tbh. Grin

I read slash almost exclusively. I write only slash unless I get a request and then I'll write whatever people ask for within reason.

pocketsaviour · 25/07/2015 17:04

Don't pollute your mind with 50 Shades : it's utter crap. It's even overtaken The DaVinci Code in my personal Books I Want to Set On Fire Shitlist.*

I can't really recommend any erotica. I've never found any that was even slightly arousing. Guess I'm just a visual person :)

*Disclaimer: I did not set The DaVinci Code on fire as I didn't have a fireproof bin. I ripped out half the pages and stabbed through the covers with a screwdriver, then chucked it in the recycling.

TheImminentGin · 25/07/2015 18:37

Saul and paintedfaces thank you, I have added my email to the invitation list. I will now have to have a think about characters I am interested in. It's hard to get beyond the obvious Darcy type that we may be sold as of interest.
I'm quite excited just to find such an obviously huge creative community.

pocketsaviour I would love to find some visual stuff that is not misogynistic porn. I cannot relate to most of the stuff I've seen. In fact I find it hideous.

SaulGood · 25/07/2015 20:20

I despise the fact that 50 Shades of Shite is the big, known fan fiction. There are some really switched on women writing erotica. They know what women actually like, how to write them and what consensual, adult behaviour looks like. All my favourite fan fic disappears when the writers get publishing deals.

I have set fire to two books in my life and deleted one from my kindle with a vicious stabbing finger.

And I'm a librarian...

HelenaDove · 25/07/2015 23:27

I read loads of the Black Lace books back in the 90s and early 2000s Our local John Menzies used to stock them in a tucked away corner on the top two shelves.

I dont internet shop but some of them have been reissued under Black Lace Classics and are available on Amazon.

Does it have to be fiction?

I got a lot out of the Nancy Friday books for example, reading other women's unchallenged fantasies...

mrsleomcgary · 26/07/2015 17:02

Cliterati used to be good website though I havent been on it for years. Caters to a wide range of tastes (I onces stumpled upon something involving a dog - turned out I was in the 'taboo' section).

pocketsaviour · 26/07/2015 17:08

OP, depending on your personal tastes you may find some of these porn/erotica sites useful.

Crashpadseries.com
Queerporn.tv
Both the above cater for all things queer, so you're looking at mainly lesbian, gay, genderqueer and trans performers. Lots of people of all different body types and shapes. Some kinky stuff. Condoms always used (even on toys) and often gloves and dental dams (although I personally find those a turnoff.)

AbbyWinters.com - all natural women (although quite a few shaved), masturbation scenes plus lesbian and male/female couple scenes.

WolfHudsonisbad.com - this dude is my favourite male performer. His scenes are very respectful to his partners and about half the women in his scenes are natural, i.e. no fake-looking boobs, etc. Some of his scenes are roleplays about kidnapping, house invasion, etc, so be aware if those are triggering for you.

DaneJones.com is probably worth a look, as is Passion-HD.com although both of them are quite male-gazey - but the scenes tend to be a lot more sensual and loving - no spitting, no "Take my fucking cock you whore" rubbish. Most of the performers are natural looking, no giant fake boobs or trout pouts.

And if you're into kinky stuff I recommend anything out of the Kink.com stable - I like their Divine Bitches output. What's great with them is you get a little interview with the performers before or after the scene so you know that everyone's consenting, comfortable and respectful.

Hope that helps :)

scribblegirl · 26/07/2015 17:15

Lushstories is my website of choice, though I've got a few Ebooks - my favourite for control style sex is Elliot Mabeus, but i think finding a writer you enjoy is trial and error Wink

TheImminentGin · 29/07/2015 14:31

Many thanks to you all.
I have now received my invite from AO3 and had a quick look but there is such a lot! Need a quiet night in on my own........
I'm finding Literotica hard work as, yes there is soooo much male oriented&demeaning to women (IMO) shite.
pocketsaviour thank you, I will check those out.

Ellie88 · 31/07/2015 08:41

Kindle have loads of free erotic short stories. Good to have a look through and see what stories float your boat.

BlueKarou · 05/08/2015 16:35

With AO3 you can filter your search to only look for works rated Explicit; and you can then pick your pairing; F/M, F/F, M/M, etc. Then if you want to narrow it down by fandom you can (there's a lot of F/M Marvel stuff, alongside the Avengers slash fics, so that's usually my starting point if I want a quick read.)
