Oh! Oh! My firstborn starts secondary school in September. Surely that warrants a support thread?

Am I a bit too early for this?

I mean it's months away yet, isn't it?

Ds starts on tuesday. I'm dreading it and feeling excitement for him at the same time. I mean, lets face it, when you're ultra geeky, obsessed with money, success and fortune, deperately trying to start up a business at the age of 11 and don't give a shit what people think of you ..... it really could go either way!!

I think he'll be popular in sixth form, anyway Grin

(cat64, we havn't bought him a coat yet either! I'm relying on September being kind Grin )

gorionine · 01/09/2010 08:24

We are still looking for a coat as well. Do not quite know what will look nice on top of a blaser. What did you buy if you have bought a coat already (for a girl)?

deaddei · 01/09/2010 08:38

Haven't done coat either.
He has a waterproof which will do if it pours down, but he won't need a warm coat for a few weeks.

HSMM · 01/09/2010 08:51

DD starts next Wednesday, travelling on a public bus. I haven't bought her a coat, because apparently they are not 'cool'. I am going to wait until she asks for one :)

mmmperuna · 01/09/2010 09:21

Shock tomorrow is getting near. Have planned a theme park trip to keep him busy today and tire him out so he sleeps well - not sure it works for me - I was awake from 4am to 6am stressing

deaddei · 01/09/2010 09:28

Try not to stress mmmperuna!!!
They will all be fine (voice of experience, who is still going to be Sad)
Have you anything nice planned for yourself tomorrow?

DogDays · 01/09/2010 09:43

Apparantly secondary school kids don't wear coats Confused

roisin · 01/09/2010 10:11

At ds1's school about 50% of the students wear the coat. (It's a uniform coat, but is a nice one - lightweight, properly waterproof, a sports-type thing.) At an intro meeting a member of SMT told ds1 that the more intelligent 50% of the school choose to wear a coat!

ds1 does wear a coat - sometimes he has to wait 20 mins for the bus, so there are occasions when he would get drenched otherwise.

WilfShelf · 01/09/2010 10:21

Quick poll please: walk him to bus stop on first day? Or leave to it? [I think I know your answer already, but just gotta go ARRRRGH! Grin]

DogDays · 01/09/2010 10:27

lol wilfshelf, I also have that dilama! busstop is only 5 minutes away from the front door but I'm sure he could do with the company Grin

gorionine · 01/09/2010 10:30

I will leave to it but only because I can see the bus stop from my livingroom window!Grin

castille · 01/09/2010 10:30

The key question is does he want you to? Only do it if he says yes (or says no but means yesWink)

Re coats, DD1 wore one in her 1st year at secondary, last (freezing) winter, she refused anything warmer than a tiny fake leather jacket to leave home at 7am and stand at bus stopShock

castille · 01/09/2010 10:31

(DD1 was in Y8 equivalent last year, and doesn't have uniform)

schroeder · 01/09/2010 13:15

At least I'm not the only one not sleepingBlush ds starts tomorrow and I really don't remember being this anxious about him starting primary school.

For some strange reason I lay awake fretting about him buying his bus ticket, followed by some weird dreams about my ex snogging me and then cage fighting nakedConfused

roisin · 01/09/2010 13:47

It's OK to walk him to bus stop on first day if that's what he wants. dh went with ds1 to the bus stop first day.

ds2 doesn't want us to and is happy on his own, so we won't go.

bigTillyMint · 01/09/2010 15:01

Glad Sec Sch pupils don't wear coats - we haven't got one yet either!

Anyway, it would be so uncomfortable over the blazer.

What a disastrous day!
I took dd's blazer to a tailors to have the arms adjusted. They needed to be shortened by 2" and have the same ribbon attached to the end. Well he charged me £10 but he ruined it. I was so annoyed but he said it was the ribbons fault and that I couldn't have my money back as it took him an hour to do.

I had to take the blazer to another tailor who are charging me £5 to fix the mess. I told the first tailor he had to pay the £5 and he agreed!

Just hope it's ok when I go and pick it up tomorrow afternoon. It's different material to the collar but the colour matches so hopefully it will be ok.

I was so annoyed with him. It was the ribbons fault. I've heard it all now!

I don't know how dd is feeling but I'm getting excited for her.

castille · 02/09/2010 14:28

We are home from DD2's introductory day and she is happy, she enjoyed it and isn't nervous about her first proper day on Monday any more.

She is in a class of only 18 Shock, she has made several new friends already, her teachers all seemed pretty human, lunch wasn't bad, she has understood which buses she needs to get, and the sun was even shiningSmile

Phew. And hooray!

kid · 02/09/2010 16:33

Glad it went well.
Dd starts tomorrow, I need to iron her uniform and get her to pack her school bag.

gorionine · 03/09/2010 06:51

Just a little hello Kid! Let us now how your first morning went! All the best For your DD today!Grin

Castille that is so great, I hope it will be just the same for DD1!

DogDays · 03/09/2010 07:52

Got the uniform yesterday, DS looks too young to wear it!!! It's too grown up and smart and posh looking - seeing him in it kinda reminded me of when little kids put on police man costumes etc trying to be grown up!

It does look nice though, hair cut today and then its just the bloody name tag things to sort out!!

Snorbs · 03/09/2010 08:44

DS went in for his first day at secondary today. He didn't want me to come with him Sad so he's walking with a friend of his.

Y7 at his school spend most of their time in a separate building from the rest of the pupils, but I'm still fretting - he's gone from a small primary school to a secondary with 1,000 children(!)

LynetteScavo · 03/09/2010 08:50

OK, ofr all of you putting your child on the bus to go to school..have they ever been on a bus by themselves before?

DS1 is going on a bus, (a school bus which goes to 2 schools in the next town). He has never been on a bus by himself before.

I will be definitely be putting him on the bus on the first day....and probably for the first week (term? year?)

He will be all on his new...he doesn't know anyone at his new school, but it's the bus bit that's worrying me most.

I'm about to cry.

gorionine · 03/09/2010 09:21

Oh lynette, it is normal to feel like crying.

Is he getting dropped on his own school ground?

DD1 has never taken the bus on her own yet, reasonably often with me. She will take the school bus which litterally stops in front of our house and will get her on the school ground. I do worry but I definitely do not want DD to know I doSmile I try to worry at night only, not sleeping much and I am pretty sure I will cry a bit once she is on the bus.
