Truanting

Any advice or comments as to my situation with my daughter and school. My daughter is in year 10 and just started a new school in January, she is very happy there but a couple of weeks after she started I got a letter to say that she had not been in her tutor time class on two occasions. I spoke to my daughter and she said she had become lost in the school on one occassion and was late on another, the school knows the reasons. The tutor times are about 20 mins long and I think she just thought that it isn't a major problem if she just skipped it the second time. However after speaking to her she now makes sure that she is there. It did state in the letter that they were treating this as stage one of truancy.
Now I have just received a letter to say that she has been found truanting on 25th february for 25 mins, not tutor time, obviously I dont know what this is about yet as she isn't home from school, but they have now told me I am at stage two of truanting and I am being warned of a fixed penalty notice for up a hundred pounds.
I am a little cross as I feel this is a bit harsh, after all she is in school, she isn't leaving the premises, and unless I am shadowing her at school it's rather difficult for me to make sure she goes to the right places where she should be. She is never late and doesn't have time off, I will be talking to her again about the importance of being where she should be, but I really dont think I will be paying a fine for this truanting, nor am I in a postion to do so. What can I do other than stress to my daughter the importance of her being where she should be and is there any kind of appeal I can go to in view of the fact I feel they are being a bit harsh.

well, yes it is harsh, it's supposed to be. perhaps they have big truanting issues.

the fact is, she shouldnt be missing her classes, and if she is then it's truanting regardless of what excuse she may have!
if she is genuinely lost, then it's up to her to find her teacher and explain that. not leave it til you get a letter

i would have stern words warning her that if a fine happens that SHE will be paying it!
