Roedean School

What is it really like?

Is it a good school or just full of pretentious upshots?

Its not one we had considerd for DD to board at 13+ plus but our circumstances may potentially mean Brighton would be a good geographical location for us in a few years - although this could totaly change!

Even so I did a bit of school searcg and it was the first school to pop up. Obviously I have heard of Roedean but not sure what the school is like these days and what kind of people send their DDs there.

Does anyone have a daughter there atm or live locally or have any recent(ish) experience or knowledge of the school?

I would be grateful for any input anyone is willing to share.

I've an acquaintance with two dd's boarding there. she is thrilled with the place, but, she is a bit snobby. I had a friend who taught there about 10 years ago. She stayed for ayear because she disn't like it.
Hope you get more answers.

I know people with DC at the Towers in Stenying. Not pretentious, good results. They are very pleased with it , and cheap!. They are day pupils though

I hear that St Bede's is very good!

i know people with kids at all 3 of those schools, all 3 very different. St Bedes is sporty, not academic really.

Towers is ok, finishes at 16, pretty cheap,dd didn't want to go there. Roedean is not pretentious BUT most of school are boarders so day girls can be a bit isolated i understand,

Personally i am not in favour of single sex, so that is why we discounted Towers and Roedean, have you thought of of Brighton College if you want Brighton itself?

DD not there but lots of friends are.

Do you still need info? DD went there.

In any case, NOT pretentious. Outstanding standards of teaching.

Went to Roedean last year (considered it for my daughter)and was surprised at how 'grounded' the girls were (and were not snobby as those at Downe House - poor Kate Middleton) and I think that it has a lot to do with the fact there are a large number of girls from overseas. So the class issue is not an issue and more preoccupation with getting As in their A Levels (check their results for 2009) and not with getting married to someone rich!
