QE Boys - tutoring etc

DS is in Y5. Very bright boy, consistently top of class at outstanding state primary. We want to apply for QE Boys in Barnet (10 mins from where we live) but we need some advice on how to proceed. We're both from working class, immigrant background with no university education, and aren't sure how you go about ensuring your bright child has the best possible chance of getting into a highly competetive selective school?

Any advice?

You need the forum at Elevenplus exams. There's a Herts and Barnet section which has loads of threads on QE and DAO and the other local selective schools. But be warned, there are some scarily obsessive pushy parents on there who need to be taken with a pinch of salt.

There are good non-selective schools in Barnet too, so you should have other options if QE doesn't come off (and with 10 people going for every place you do need to have a Plan B).

No letters here yet. Have you received anything comet2?

Yes, DS got through to the second test. we got our letter on Saturday. A couple of his friends got through aswell. Good Luck, the next test will really be a tough one to pass as so many boys are trying for this school.

My DS was the only one in his school so we don't know anyone else who took it.

I feel for bright children trapped in primary school maths. Have you looked at the bbc bitesize maths pages? I know QE boys. It is very good for some children. I'd love to know what your ds thinks of bitesize maths and at what point he finds himself in the unfamiliar. QE boys aims to be the best public school in the country and it is not doing too badly.

I don't think class or education matters as much as an internet connection in a quiet place dedicated to study and supportive parents, which he already has. Good luck.

We got the letter this morning but my DS didn't get through. He did get through to the next round for Latymer so we were quite surprised.

When I asked him what he thought about it, he said that the staff at QE were not as nice as at Latymer and that was probably the reason he didn't do so well

MamaTaxi- same position as you; am choosing Habs over Watford Grammar (QE was second choice for state school). I will as though I am about to piss money away. Thoughts?

Mamataxi, TDiddy: Wonder how your Dcs are doing in Habs. Most importantly do you regret not hoosing QE? Is the money well worth it?
