Hi, I am afraid I am a complete "duffer" at maths and I need to know this: (there is a sec school related issue, I promise!!): if you were in school for 30 and a half days out of 36, what would that be as a percentage? Thank you so much.

3o.5 /36 x 100 = 84.7

AMumInScotland · 22/10/2009 16:18

84.7% (30.5 x 100 / 36)

FaintlyMacabre · 22/10/2009 16:18

84.72%

In future, to find out what % x is of y, divide x by y then multiply by 100.

Thank you SO much to ALL of you and thanks, Faintly, for telling me how to work it out!! I have forgotten my maths from the 70s!! I was saying to Scary the other night that I only managed a CSE grade D - shameful!!! Am good at English and Science, though, so not a complete duffer!!!! Thanks again.

x/100 = 30.5/36 What is x is another way of asking this question. (remember percentage means out of 100 or per 100)

So, what number when you divide it by 100 will give you the same answer as 30.5/36 (= answer A or 0.8472)

The answer is obviously answer A multiplied by 100 (so that when you divide it by 100 you get answer A)

Or (30.5/36) x 100 = 84.72
0.8472 x 100 = 84.72

I always work back to first principles as I can't rely on my memory. I envy people who have 'reliable' memories .
