Boy caught on CCTV stealing - what will happen to him?

Child came home today and told me that money had been taken from a bag in the 6th form common room. They knew about this because the money was taken from someone in their year. They had, without realising it, disturbed the thief and were present when the loss was discovered. The thief had been caught because he was on the CCTV.

My child wants to know what will happen to the thief. Anyone know what the usual practise is?

Well a boy that got caught stealing at a local school was permanantly excluded. However he had a long history of bad behaviour in and out of school including mugging my DS who goes to a different school.
When we went into his school I got the impression the school were desperate for any evidence they could get against him.
He got caught stealing in the changing rooms a few months after we went in and was excluded.

Do they have a written policy?

My ds' school does and I was surprised to see that certain actions have "permanent exclusion" written next to them. I say surprised because I had previously thought that you couldn't be excluded from school without quite a lengthy process being gone through.

So, for example, a friend's school was continuing to teach a child who had committed an offence with a knife, while on my ds' form it stated that theft was permanently excludable ... .

I'll be checking this thread with interest for when the experts turn up.

Just had a look at the school website and they mention sanctions for missing homework and the like but not for more serious things. I guess the boy who left money in his bag will get a ticking off for not leaving it in a locker and I suspect that the thief will be excluded at least temporarily.

I hadn't realised the school had CCTV in the common rooms and I'm not sure I approve.
