maths year 7 class aiming too high

In our school the top set seem to be given work which is in the curriculum for 14-16 year olds. why are they trying to stretch the life out of the kids. Half of the class can do some of the homework set and then just find it too hard and the teacher goes over the work the next day in class. worried that if the level they are reaching for is so high the kids will not be learning that well. + how will they fit key stage 3 in.

Am not sure, but DS1 (Yr7) informed us tonight that he has been doing Yr9 tests today .

DS hates maths but fortunately he is very very good at it (DH would probably think that being stretched is good for them though).

Is there any chance for you to have a word with the form tutor?

well done to your clever kids-must be hard to work out what to do

I'm all for stretching kids and taking them a little way out of their comfort zone but if half the class is struggling with set homework etc then the knock on effect on confidence etc could have lasting effects. I'd suggest you talked to the Maths teacher regarding this.

the crucial point is whether the kids are getting worried or not

dd's set did Yr 8 work in Yr 6 and thoroughly enjoyed it, even the bits that she found very hard

but if students are losing heart= not good
