ds1's (state) school has about that number, but just ages 11-16

I'm not a fan of big schools at all, but he seems very happy and settled there and it is a very good school.

MaryAnnSingleton · 05/01/2009 07:23

we don't mind going over stuff again SueW ! ds's school is I think smallish for a secondary (can't remember offhand the number of students) at least it is compared to a London school which is where he'd have gone if we'd stayed there and I'm grateful that he's not in a huge place. Having said all that about anxieties about friendships, he seems to be very happy and settled there.

DD school is circa 800 of the little darlings.

MaryAnnSingleton · 05/01/2009 07:31

OOh can I come back into the fold? DD1 really, really didn't want to go back this morning. She has been a bit morose for the last few days about it. She knows she will be alright when she gets going but she is still finding it all a bit 'different'. She said she felt like crying this morning but she didn't want to look like she had when she got there so she wouldn't! Bless she really will be alright but who doesn't remember that monday after a holiday feeling?
Not helped by the fact that dd2 doesn't go until tomorrow so she and I are going out for a girly day of course .

MaryAnnSingleton · 05/01/2009 09:17

oh I do know that Sunday night/Monday morning feeling and I don't have to go to school !!

I have asked ds to get his bag ready with all homework etc etc 4 times now - still not done.

He has just asked me "where is my science homework, I left it in here", I told him I had not seen it - his response "well paper just does not get up and walk by itself"

and breathe..

MaryAnnSingleton · 05/01/2009 12:07

ahh, but he was probably quoting you bellavita !! that sounds just like ds...

He has just found his memory stick in his pit of a bedroom (which he lost 2 weeks ago!)

roisin · 05/01/2009 15:50

I've got home and no sign of the boys or dh. The post was on the mat, so they've clearly been out somewhere all day, no doubt having a whale of a time.
And I've been stuck at work

They don't go back til Wednesday.

bellavita · 05/01/2009 16:41

aww poor you roisin

MaryAnnSingleton · 05/01/2009 17:00

They've all had a wonderful day
They went over to an RSPB reserve: dh had apparently promised them that if it was very cold there was a good chance of seeing a water rail
His persuasive techniques are obviously very good! They wrapped up warm and apparently no-one complained about the temperature at all.

Actually, they are all getting quite serious about it. In a hide today a lady jumped up and got very excited when a bird flew across, shouting "Look, it's a bittern". Apparently ds2 (9) politely pointed out that it was a grey heron, and ds1 (11) rather condescendingly said "But, it's an easy mistake to make. The bittern is a member of the heron family."

I'm not sure I dare go out with them any more: they sound like precocious kids from some silly TV comedy!

MaryAnnSingleton · 05/01/2009 18:36

that is so funny roisin ! bless them for knowing about birds - ds is the same and we spent ages looking for bittern at Minsmere in the summer

sounds like they had a lovely day roisin

swedishmum · 05/01/2009 22:18

Hello, I've got a Y7 ds I worry hugely about (despite having Y10 and 8 dds I've never worried about!) Please can I join in?
I think it's simply that boys say less than girls about what goes on at school. Also he is dyslexic so I worry far more about how he'll cope and what people will think of his spelling etc.
Hope all those going back tomorrow have a good day. Ds had not much to say as usual about his first day back today.

robinpud · 05/01/2009 22:24

Hello!
Dd was bursting to go back to school today.. ( doubt that will be the case for much longer!)
A sad reflection of their life is that everyone in her english group who discussed worst/best pressies got something electronic generally with screen.. ie ipod/wii/phone.

UnfortunatelyMe · 05/01/2009 22:30

Can I gatecrash and ask you how much your child has changed since year 6?
DD is year 6 and should be heading to grammar school in a few months, however, shes very eye rolly at putting an effort in and I am worrying already..

robinpud · 05/01/2009 22:45

dd hasn't changed at all; the traits she had at primary school remain the same. She was organised and quite responsible and these things have been important and have developed further. She was sociable and continues to be so,especially as finally she has found a group of like minded friends.

MaryAnnSingleton · 05/01/2009 22:48

ds seems pretty much the same, just a bit more independent and grown up !

OP posts:
UnfortunatelyMe · 05/01/2009 22:49

So 5 years or so or eye rolling and swatting her with her homework then. Gee
Thanks you two

bellavita · 05/01/2009 22:50

Welcome to swedishmum and UnfortunatelyMe - course you can join in.

Hello to robinpud - not seen you for a while.

DS still wide awake (in bed though) saying he cannot get to sleep, I am sure he is not worrying about anything, but me thinks he would like to stay up longer than his 9.00pm bedtime and this is his way of saying he is not tired enough to go to bed.

Swedishmum - my DS does not say much at all about school and when probed gets all huffy.

UnfortunatelyMe - the eye rolling started at just before the end of Yr6 nd has got worse for my DS, he does a good "Kevin" impression!

Robinpud - can I just ask - what was the general consensus in the class then if you were a child that received any of those or all?
