I am so split for my ds and would be really grateful if you could share your experiences.
I actually prefer Carshalton boys but Greenshaw has a better reputation.
I only have 2 weeks to decide (help)

My son has just started at Carshalton Boys (year 7) and loves it, although he is very sporty and it is a 'sports college'.

Although the reputation of Carshalton Boys might not be great, my DD has a (boy) friend who has just sat his GCSEs in the summer and he was in the local Guardian because he got 16 GCSEs at Carshalton Boys!

Saying that, I did put Greenshaw as our first choice (also for my eldest DD) but Greenshaw is very over-subscribed so unless your son has a particular medical/educational reason why he needs to attend and unless you live very close to the school, you probaby won't get a place.

Saying that, you could put Greenshaw first and Carshalton Boys second and, if you didn't get Greenshaw, you would definitely get Carshalton Boys - if that makes sense.

I received a letter from Greenshaw saying that my son was still on the waiting list but have written back asking them to remove him as I would not move him now as it was more of my choice that he went to Greenshaw and he is so settled in.

Hi bumblelion

Didn't realised you lived near me!!!

See my ds is kind of sporty but more academic I would say so can do the Greensahw test, although not sure he would get in.

To be honest I loved Carshalton boys and felt Greenshaw hadn't moved with the times ( I went there many years ago! ) and there was something I really liked about it and the Ofsted and head were amazing.

Thanks for your feedback!

If you feel he is able, then let him sit the Greenshaw test. My nephew (lives nearer Beddington) sat the test and got in but I didn't feel my son was academic enough - no way would he have passed the test (and I don't mean that critically).

The other schools we looked at were Overton Grange (too far for him to travel) and Stanley Park (again a bit too far for him).

Do you mind me asking what school your son is currently in? I understand if you don't want to answer.

Dd1 is in the 6th form at Greenshaw, She's done well there and we've always been happy with the school. We chose Greenshaw mainly because we thought a mixed school would suit her best, we were lucky enough to live in their catchment at that time. It's a very personal choice to make so it depends on what you think will best for him. Stanley Park will definitely be right at the bottom of my list when choosing for dd2 next year, think Carshalton girls will be our only option, and for ds the following year will be Carshalton Boys.

Bumblelion · 08/10/2008 10:46

I can also give you my e-mail address but it gives my surname.

Blossomhill · 08/10/2008 14:50

not sure how to contact you then do you have CAT???

Thanks bigcar. My ds would probably pass the entrance test so it is a toss up between the 2 but I have to say I preferred Car boys even though I went to Greenshaw myself many years ago! I think I am listening too much to school gate gossip. Having said that Car boys had a fantastic ofsted last week and I loved the head and all the staff! The pe teachers were particularly nice
