World Challenge, has anyones DC's been on one?

DD wants to go on one, basically I can understand that it would be a fantastic opportunity etc, but I'm trying to make her see sense. The cost is 4K due in 18 months time. They are supposed to raise this money but £50 a week. It would be impossible.

No, but watching with intesrest as the Headmaster did a presentation on this a few weeks ago, so steeling myself for BIG BUCKS...

I can afford to put something towards it. I'm just worried about the pressure to work and fund raise and the affect it will have on her. I'ts an enormous amount of money and I'm not convinced it is worth it.

I think they are raising money for this at DS school. So far they have raised about £2000 in total so a long way to go. They sell cakes at parents evening etc, raffle tickets and they have just announced a band night. They have also doing bag packing at a local supermarket. Our local M&S I know let local groups in on a weekend to help bag pack for donations.
They are also trying to get sponsorship from the local business communitee

Just seen this. DS2 went on a World Challenge this summer - 3 weeks in South Africa and Lesotho, which cost around £3000. Some money was earned by bag packing over two Christmas holidays, but DS and his school friends soon decided that they would never raise the money by fund raising, so most got the money through Saturday jobs and by their parents/grandparents giving them some money. (Yes I know they are supposed to raise it all themselves, but realistically that would be very difficult). The trip cost around £3,000 in all including clothing, vaccinations etc. It is very expensive, but DS thought it was a worthwhile experience and he came back noticeably more mature (at least for a while).
