Does anyone know where I can find a good downloadable animation of digestion, suitable for KS3?

I will be eternally grateful...

little advanced, but you could talk them trough it

I also have an egg box as a starch molecule, and draw the 'gaps' in the intestines on the board. Bluetack the egg box to the board and they can all see that it is too big to pass. Then have 'enzyme scissors' that cut up the glucose ,molecules that are then small enough to pass through the wall

I came across a clip on Youtube where the presenter collected a bunch of ordinary stuff to show the digestive system.

He used a car sponge to show the stomach, elephant tubing for the gullet, and lots of rope for the intestines. It looked like a good hands on exercise.

There are loads of animations on Youtube, btw. There is a great BBC clip that shows it all from the inside.

Funny you should say that squeakypop. I have a rather lovely magic sponge from Lakeland that I bought especially to demonstrate villi - it even has microvilli (is a bit furry)

I also do (with the right classes) the following

one end of the classroom is the gut

The other end is the muscles.

Pick 4 volenteers (!)

2 are muscles, 2 are the small intestine.

Rest of the class s the blood stream

Give the small intestine kids a strip of tiddlywinks that you have stick to sellotape. they have to be the enzymes and cut up the glucose. Glucose can then pass to the rest of the kids who act as the blood stream, picking up the glucose from the gut and dropping it off at the muscles. 'Muscles' can only flex their arms when they get some glucose!

For top sets you can factor in CO2 and the lungs and O2 as well if you like

Oooh

I used to do something similar with concentration gradients in the gills with my A level classes. Many moons ago.
