Too late for a GCSE remark?

DS received his lowest GCSE in Business. He was predicted a grade 8 but came away with a 6 and was 2 marks off a grade 7. He was very disappointed and asked school to request his paper to be looked at to see if it was worth sending off for a remark. The Business teacher left it until the deadline day of 23rd Sept to reply to DS who was repeatedly chasing. He said the paper was marked fairly and sent DS a copy of his paper a week later.

DS has run the paper through AI or ChatGBT (i can't remember which he said) He needed 125 marks for a 7, he got 123 but he thinks he could have got 127.

Is there anything we can now do or is it too late? DS was gutted with the 6 as he had worked so hard for it. Exam board is Edexcel

He's missed the deadline, and I would pay more attention to the teacher's advice than AI.

The teacher has looked at it and doesn’t think there are the additional 2 marks available on his paper.
Trust me when I say the teachers will have checked thoroughly as it also benefits them when papers come back with the extra marks, however on more occasions they do not move up, and on some occasions I’ve seen students actually lose marks! Yes the deadline has now gone. Also -
putting it through AI is not something to be encouraged as we have found that Ai is actually not very accurate and more lenient!

It's not a remark. It's a review of marking. And yes, far too late.

Too late anyway but you could have had it sent off regardless of the teachers thoughts if you had wanted to and before the deadline (we did on the basis that the teacher - English - had more than enough to do without having to review my DD’s paper as well). I think also that most papers do not change and that you only read the positive stories on here so get a disproportionate sense of the number that go up. 6 is a good mark - encourage him to be pleased with that.

The problem is that they will only improve marks for point marked questions or questions s where the level is incorrect. So there may well be harsh marking but if the levels are accurate it won't go up. This is the conclusion the teacher has come up with.

As a teacher, at the start of term I get a huge number of requests to 'just check my paper' I can tell you it's a lengthy job. We have to download the mark scheme and then essentially mark the paper. This is on top of all the start of term madness that slt are throwing at us (seating plans, pupil plans, implementing new polices, reading the KICSIE, doing the gdpr training, the health and safety training and so on....oh and somewhere at the bottom of our list thinking about what we might actually teach as well.

It's a favour (to save you money) when a teacher checks over a paper, not a requirement of their job and all the ones I have looked at have been done at home late at night as that is the only free time I have left.

Not necessarily too late.

DD asked for a review of one of her papers and got no response. Offered to pay, chased up about 6 times and still no reply. And missed the deadline.

I contacted the exam board. They asked me to send copies of all correspondence asking for the review, and eventually came back to say that the panel agreed for a late review.

Paper went up two grades and an overall grade change. Was a faff because certificates had to be reissued in new grade.

If you have the written documentation that you tried to get the review done and were blocked, you may still have the opportunity.
