Last year there was a very helpful thread discussing the Sutton grammar schools. Results of round 1 coming out tonight according to the old thread's timelines!
Would be helpful to know what everyone gets once you know! They seem to come out in batches too.

As mum of 2 OOC girls I’ve always found the girls’ school catchment method benefitting the in catchment girls a lot. I wish they would do it the other way round like the boys I.e. in catchment first then the open list.

Yes, obviously the Sutton girls' schools intend to take a majority of local girls, whereas the Sutton boys' schools don't mind taking a larger proportion of top-scoring boys regardless of where they live. But in my view, Tiffin Girls' has the best approach. They first establish a large catchment (designated area), divide it into a small inner area and an outer section, and then apply a priority mechanism similar to the Sutton boys' schools by allocating up to one third places to the inner area first. This strikes a great balance by maximizing the number of local girls admitted while still maintaining reasonable regional access.

Agreed, some schools which are aiming for top scores have a better approach. It gives everyone a fair chance while still giving local kids a bit of an advantage but not hugely so.

Is anyone able to do any work this morning? 🤣🤣

No, literally sitting with my fingers crossed

Same. Good luck to all!

From what I can gather the catchment places don’t make a great deal of difference for the boys - certainly not for the 15 WCGS places. Even at SGS, because they rank the catchment candidates first to allocate places, then the OOC candidates, it means you’ve still only really got one bite of the cherry (as if you haven’t ranked highly enough for one of the 75 catchment places, it’s unlikely you’ll have done so for one of the out of catchment ones). That’s very different to how the girls schools do it - they rank everyone by score first for the open places, then do so the catchment ones, so if you’re in catchment you really do get two opportunities.

Edited

I didn't know the boys schools did it this way (I have a girl). It seems a bit pointless. Surely if they allocate the catchment places first, most of them would have got a place anyway, especially at Wallington where there are only 15! You might as well not bother!

It is far from pointless. Without that rule, there is always a slim chance that very few local boys get in. The school governors want peace of mind against that exact scenario. Even if data shows it's rarely triggered after the event, you can't guarantee that beforehand.

Sutton email here. We're out :(

We’ve passed Sutton grammar school but they seem to have passed a considerable amount of boys: 1392 candidates sat the second stage test and 1165 met the required standard for Sutton Grammar School.

That's normal. Last year they passed almost the same number. They need that many because many children sit the Sutton 11+ as one of several (including those from familes who don't live anywhere near Sutton). Only 704 applicants actually put either Wilson's, SGS or WCGS as their first preference last year (despite 1,121 having passed SGS at least).

trying29 · 15/10/2026 13:34

you'd be surprised how far people are travelling to the Sutton grammars - my son in Wallington has classmates coming from Whitechapel and Blackheath, and someone just moved from Romford

I'm sorry to hear that but your DS did incredibly well to get this far (only around 30% or so even pass stage 1). He's clearly very bright and see how the other two schools go.

Have you thought about registering for the Glenthorne banding test? It's now one of the very best comprehensives in the country with extremely strong top sets. Greenshaw is also very high performing, particularly for the boys.

Thank you for the kind words We didn't do tutoring as he's gifted and does a whole other array of activities to round up his interests. We've spent months together honing his weaknesses and working on the exam format, but his confidence took a tumble when his best friend didn't attend school for two weeks to revise for the exam. Our school advised parents not to do that and the family was obviously fined.....

Will check Glenthorne out. We're in Croydon so a bit limited in terms of commuting.

That makes the result even more impressive to be honest.

Glenthorne went out more than 4.5km on the waiting list for Band 8 last year and Band 9 was actually undersubscribed (though it's very difficult to achieve). I think Greenshaw definitely have quite a few boys coming from Croydon for their 60 selective places and they don't consider distance at all.

According to the Department of Education's newly released data today, all of these Croydon schools scored well at GCSE this year (above 50 for Attainment 8): Coloma Convent Girls' School (not relevant obviously), Riddlesdown Collegiate, Coombe Wood School, Harris City Academy Crystal Palace, Harris Academy Purley, Orchard Park High School, Oasis Academy Coulsdon.

Yes, I've been keeping an eye on state schools and we've gone to see them. Coombe Wood, Harris and Riddlesdown are our top 3. Fingers crossed! Still waiting for Wallington but a quick calc tells me that it is out of the question too

are girls' results for Nonsuch and Wally Girls also out today?

NameChanger2026 · 15/10/2026 14:46

Good luck to all today - high emotions all round! We just got a no from Wilsons, and a pass from Sutton. is there any way i can use the Wilsons mark to work out Sutton chances?
Wilsons Scores:
Maths 244 (Minimum threshold 160)
English 187 (Minimum threshold 192)
SET 549 (Pass mark 485)

trying29 · 15/10/2026 14:47

My son got slightly less last year for Wilsons (also didnt pass it) and got in first choice to WAllington on those scores. I dont know for Sutton but I'd assume a very good chance

CarshaltonMum · 15/10/2026 16:54

DD passed too. English pass mark was apparently 75. Don't know Maths or overall. I wish they still gave out girls' scores!
