DS scored 146 on his MidYIS. I understand this is quite a high score, but I’m not really sure what it actually means in practice. Does anyone know how to interpret it?

It means he will be expected to gain very high GCSE results due to his high score as in theory he’s very capable but that doesn’t always translate to the high scores. For perspective, my DC scored 129 I think and that was the highest score in the cohort of 300 kids. Targets were all 8’s across the board as they were on target throughout, yet came out with a mix of 5’&6’s and a random 9. So disappointing under the circumstances.

Whilst objectively those grades are fine, that MidYis score gave a false sense of security which never came to fruition. Almost as if DC didn’t need to try as hard. Tbf DC didn’t put as much effort in as you’d need to get grad 8’s etc…. But knowing that score was almost a bit of a hindrance for us. Your DC will probably have target grades of 9’s.

If they do give him target grades of 9’s just make sure that if they say he’s on track that they are being genuine, because I think that’s part of the issue for my DC. Always on track according to teachers so they were either misleading as they didn’t want to be flagged up if DC wasn’t doing as well in their lesson. So DC probably thought I’m still on track for 8’s with x amount of effort but then suddenly in year 11 they weren’t on target.

Four sections- vocab, maths, skills, non verbal.

It’s used to indicate areas of strength and challenge, so teachers can use it as part of their assessments and predictors. It’s useful too, if the profile is very spiky i.e a high score in some sections and a low in others. There’s the overall score too, which, for your son, is high OP. Anything over 115 is regarded as high.
