Year 7 support 2026

I’ve not noticed a year 7 support thread so here goes….

My youngest child started year 7 today. Inner city, state comp. He’s gone up alone as unfortunately none of his primary school friends got into this school.

Today was the first day. He came home and looked a little deflated…. and tired. Totally forgot how much this term drains them to be honest. A couple of 8pm bedtimes will be on the cards.

He sat on his own eating his lunch. I know it’s early days….but, still. 😢 He refused a snack when he got in from school (not like him at all).

Fingers crossed he has at least one friend very soon. He’s never struggled socially but his primary school was small, and he’s very quiet. How did other year 7s get on today?

If she wants more time to ‘play’, clubs are the best place for it! I pretty much made mine go to one in year 7 and it was a success and she ended up doing more. I’d really encourage it. Especially if her mates are going

I've said this @fashionqueen0123 A large part of it is anxiety about lunchtime clubs, incase she doesn't have time to have lunch or get to next lesson on her own. I think at the end of the day she is just really ready to come home. I will leave it til half term then try and nudge her again.

She does so swimming and gymnastics outside of school so it isn't like she isn't doing anything, its more about getting her involved in school life.

To be honest I think she just spends a lot of the day running on adrenaline at the moment and feels relief when lunchtime comes or the end of the day comes! She is an end of August birthday and honestly this is the first time I've noticed her seeming younger, other than the first term in reception. It is a big transition isn't it.

My DS is in an independent school and they have 3 conpulsory clubs a week. Two are 4.20 - 5pm and one is just after lunch. This term he has badminton, Taskmaster and golf. It's nice as they mix with the older kids in the school and get to try something new!

Mines a mid June baby and I’ve noticed the same, some of the girls in her new class just seem so much older!

Joining this thread in solidarity and to share the year 7 worries! My dd is exhausted and had to have two days off sick last week, my son had the same in year 7 - all the new germs I guess! Of course she’s now stressed about what she has missed in lessons.

Ahh, hope she's feeling better. It just takes a lot of getting used to i think. My DD has been battling a really sore throat today, I imagine there is a lot of exposure to germs! I'm really hoping she wakes up tomorrow feeling better not worse!

FlatStanley50 · 20/09/2026 20:05

Mine had to have a day off on Friday with a sore throat/ virus but I think a lot of it was being overwhelmed / stressed with all the change. She’d always refuse to stay off at primary school. I’m finding it overwhelming trying to work out how it all works let alone her! She’s had quite a lot of homework already too, I thought they’d ease them in.

Knickerbockerglory75 · 21/09/2026 10:19

Mine came down with a cold on Thursday and battled through Friday at school, even though he felt under the weather. He seems to have got rid of it today bar the odd sneeze which is good as he has 45 mins of badminton and 2hrs of rugby!

HollyIvie · 21/09/2026 16:34

God mine has come home in a real mood saying she had a really sore throat!!

Monvelo · 21/09/2026 16:40

Dd got off like a duck to water but had a crash out this morning, lots of emotion. I guess novelty and adrenaline wearing off. Sore throats here too, dd and me, it's a bad one i can testify.

Susquehanna · 21/09/2026 21:34

I thought my DS was getting on ok but the novelty has definitely worn off now and he was really sad today. He misses his primary friends and although he is very sociable, doesn't feel like he has any proper friends yet. His class seem to scatter at break and lunch and disappear off to their primary friends in other forms. He either goes to join a massive group of yr7 boys and tags on to them or spends time looking for people he knows. When do the primary groups start to break up? If his class stuck together a bit more it would make such a difference. I'd love him to make some proper friends soon

Quokkafeet · 21/09/2026 22:26

Very similar here. DD full of cold.

Like with your DS @Susquehanna , I think it was such an exciting new experience at first and now the reality has set in for my DD and she just really misses her friends and the familiarity of primary. She says the same, that she hangs around with loads of people at break and lunch but says that they are other people's new friends, not hers.
I do think everything seems worse when you're under the weather though and it seems they've all got colds this week! She says even a lot of the teachers are have lost their voices so clearly something going round.

Knickerbockerglory75 · 22/09/2026 10:44

My DS's new bestie got a girlfriend yesterday so he is miffed as he is not hanging out with him at break! I said, it will blow over and DS said No, I think they'll get married!! I guess it is a big deal at 11! DS is not interested in girls yet!

JohnnyMcGrathSaysFuckOff · 22/09/2026 14:33

DD seems to be getting on well at school but actually TOO involved.

She has signed up for netball, and joined creative writing club, and taken on a role in an extracurricular production of Legally Blonde, AND is auditioning for a lead role in a new Y7 musical (although don't think she'll get it).

She is however getting very stressed by the volume of work, which I think she is actually exaggerating. So she will catastrophize, "oh I NEED to check Google classroom at 8pm in case they posted a new assignment" - well they're not going to do that.....

Behaviour also gone full Kevin The Teenager - her name is stupid, why did we call her that, she wants more screentime, she's not going to eat breakfast.

Whoever said it was like a giant toddler is so right 😆 she actually shouted "I'm not tired!" At me 2 nights back, exactly like overtired 3yo!!

Divinedownload · 22/09/2026 16:00

Well my son seems to have settled well. He started alone so this is a big relief. Friday he came home completely done in, as he had pushed himself in the PE bleep test and got to 11.2, which is pretty good for an 11 year old boy. He’s playing in an after school football match today and pick up is 5.45pm. He will be curled up in a ball on the sofa later. Trying to stick to 8pm, 8.30pm bedtimes but it’s not always easy is it? He looks like a zombie.

Dd seems to be mentioning more new names now which is good. She walks in in the morning but has started getting the bus home (it’s only a few stops) as she found out a couple of girls in her form get the bus that way. She seems to have grown up massively in just a few weeks.

Purpletoes · 25/09/2026 08:14

DD seems to be taking it in her stride. She has found a little group of 5 or 6 girls in her form as well as some train commute friends.

She is tired most evenings but is getting into a better routine we had some bad issues with sleeping in year 6.
We have a meeting with form tutor in 2 weeks to see how she is settling in.

She is loving all the different subjects
