Another English GCSE remark question

DD was 1 mark off the next grade up in English Lan (and 2 grades below her predictions).

The exam officer is at school but no teachers to advise so I initially sent paper 1 in for a review as the lowest paper.

I'm just wondering whether there will be time to send paper 2 in after we hear back on Paper 1?

I put them in to Chat GPT after I'd sent them - didn't realise this was a thing until I saw it on another thread - and it identified more possible marks available on Paper 2. So I'm wondering if I've sent the wrong paper in. It did identify a couple more in paper 1 but was more tentative whereas there were about 8 in paper 2

She doesn't need the grade to continue with studies but she is doing English Lit A level (where she got nearly full marks) and would like a better Lan grade.

As above re the deadline. I would advise caution with using ChatGPT for marks/results analysis. In my experience it is not usually very accurate - I think it’s part of the problem of English being so subjective. I would probably say that getting teacher advice when they are back in school is your best bet? Good luck!

Thanks both. I know Chat is unreliable but when I look at the script, q2 of paper says High in level but she only got 4/8 despite making some petty good points IMO.

Also think she has been marked quite harshly in the 40 marker but I guess we'll see!

Chat GPT honestly isn’t good for this. I’ve fed essays into it before and it’s been miles off the grades

Our dc was told they’re not allowed to put answers from their returned GCSE papers into AI - the school gave the impression this was an exam board rule. Anyone know if this is true?

I've read on other threads that some teachers advise to put scripts through AI tools (although there are I believe more accurate ones) and apparently that's what some schools do anyway, so I can't see how it can be malpractice

The problem is that the senior examiner who reviews the paper isn’t looking for “more marks” in the way that ChatGPT was. They will check that there hasn’t been a clerical error (that all marks were recorded and added up correctly) and that the original marking of the script was ‘reasonable’. So when reviewing a script, the second examiner might have given question 4 18/20 but if they can understand the first examiner’s rationale for giving it 16/20 that mark will stand.

JCQ has put this in place precisely to tackle the problem of people applying for reviews of marking because the student was only 1 or 2 marks off the boundary above - they want to make sure that those who don’t apply are not disadvantaged. If examiner 1 thought the paper was worth 60/80 (and the boundary for the next grade up is 61/80), examiner 2 is not looking for that one extra mark - a change of one mark would be inappropriate as it would suggest that the original examiner’s marking had been reasonable.

I'm not really seeing what the risk is since the exam has been completed.

Anyway our school didn't advise anything so I guess I'll just wait and see what happens when the paper comes back.

OP when the examiner said ‘high in level’, they meant high in Level 2. If they had awarded 5 marks, it would then say ‘low in level’ as 5-6 marks in Level 3.

In my experience, what to look out for is whether the original examiner placed the answer in the right level originally. This is where the teachers can help you. However, as it is subjective, even if one teacher would have put the answer in L3 but there is sufficient evidence as to why the original examiner put in in L2, it will likely stay as that.

It is also worth bearing in mind that it can (and does) go the other way as well. Adjusting a Q to a different level can then shoot marks down as well as up. You need to have a good buffer for the grade boundary below you.

She's 1 mark off a 7 but 9 marks above a 5 so hopefully she won't go down.

We exams the exams officer at DD’s school whether there were any pros & cons to sending both papers off together rather than one and then the other and were told that, if you send them together and the grade changes, you get the cost of both papers refunded whereas if you do one and then the other, then you are more likely to be out of pocket as presumably you’ll only send the second paper off if the grade doesn’t change after the first paper

That's true - but what's also true is that one change could cancel out another change.

deadline of review of marking is 22nd of September.

please ignore whatever chat gtp says. I am really bored of being told chat gtp has found 3,4,5 marks and it ends up going down by 2.

please also remember that this is not a ‘remark’. This is a review of marking. The paper is not being remarked from scratch
