I can't see why it would be an issue as such though. The requirements are the same as any A level exam. Not sure why a PP says the listening exam is a faff – also you don't need an external examiner for that (did they maybe mean the speaking actually?). Actually for A level the listening and reading paper is conducted by the student; they can listen to the audio as much as they want, so they need the equipment for that, but that's hardly complex.

Meant to add – do you have a tutor? I assume your DC is a native speaker but they will need some input for the A level topic and film/book work. (I'm not offering haha Russian is not a language I speak)

Edited

Sorry meant speaking is a faff! Although listening always stresses me out in case the tech goes wrong!

Callmejudith · 13/06/2026 22:21

@whereonthestair brilliant for the gold medal!

Zero physics revision happening here. We did go out for a family dinner earlier and he was quite chatty which was lovely

XelaM · 13/06/2026 22:29

@clary and @labradorservant thank you! Yes, she's kind of a native speaker, but born in the UK, although we speak it at home (I try to force encourage her to speak to me in Russian but most of the time she speaks English 😬). She is fairly good at speaking/listening/reading, but writing is definitely her weakness as she makes loads of SPAG errors. Definitely couldn't do it without her long-suffering tutor 😆

Littletreefrog · 13/06/2026 22:30

@whereonthestair well done to your DS on his gold medal.

XelaM · 13/06/2026 22:30

Zero physics revision happening here as well 🧐

Drivingselfmad · 13/06/2026 22:32

Marking my place. Counting down until Tuesday 🥳

makemineadecaf · 14/06/2026 06:36

Morning all. Sending positivity to get decent revision done today. Dd hates physics aiming for a 6, so wants to focus on Spanish which she could get 8/9. M

3 to go…

ShesRunningOutTheDoor · 14/06/2026 07:02

Marking place. So nearly there!

NotDarkGothicMama · 14/06/2026 08:17

I'm just about to remind sleeping DS that he has a 4-hour Physics revision session at school at 9. He's already said he has no intention of going. Wish me luck...

On a Sunday?! Kudos to that teacher!

beasmithwentworth · 14/06/2026 08:30

@makemineadecaf same here for Spanish .. and it’s DS’s least favourite subject. He’s ‘distraught’ that almost all of his mates are finished after physics on Monday. Says he’s going to try and be the last one in the exam hall (he gets extra time) so he doesn’t have to see them all whooping and going off to celebrate after physics!
I have of course explained that whilst I understand his disappointment, it really is only 1 more day, and one that will be long forgotten once they are into the swing of festivals and holidays once everyone is done!

coffeeagogo · 14/06/2026 09:10

Zero physics and further maths revision happened yesterday. I am trying to prise DD out of bed but she is just not interested. I think she is most excitied about leaving school and never having to wear a uniform again (cause of much anxiety and discomfort over the years)

Garble · 14/06/2026 09:13

I’ve not been able to check these threads because DS has adopted a “I’ll start revision for each exam the night before at 9.30pm” approach and I just couldn’t bring myself to take part in any more gcse chat.

So delighted that there’s only 1 left - until DC2 in a couple of years!

FlyingPandas · 14/06/2026 09:32

Checking in. Thank you for the new thread @UncomfortableSilence

I’ve really enjoyed this chat so far and hope we can keep the threads going right up to results day and beyond! Very grateful to all and also relieved at the range of ‘exam child parenting’ experiences shared -from the uber-conscientious, carefully studious DC to the ‘oh, we don’t really need to revise for that paper’ ones (looking at you, DS!) - everyone has been so supportive of each other which is lovely.

Here’s to the last few exams being over and done with 🎉

LattePatty · 14/06/2026 10:29

Physics tomorrow (along with the rest of the land) and extended maths Tuesday afternoon. Definitely not working as hard as he was. In fact not working very much as far as I can see.

Good luck to all for the final few days.

Don't worry, you're not the only one. DS is still in bed with no sign of any of the self-study he promised after flat out refusing to go to the revision session. He's driven me absolutely insane these last few weeks. Although, he did attend the Chemistry hot tips on Friday. I was most suspicious.

waitingquietly · 14/06/2026 12:39

Thank you for the new thread @UncomfortableSilence

MabelsBeats · 14/06/2026 16:48

Thank you for the new thread. I can’t believe that it will all be over in a matter of hours!

I’ve nipped out and got DD a beautiful bunch of flowers for when she gets home tomorrow. They’re hidden in the utility room sink for now, no chance of her going in there voluntarily 🤣

Tebheag · 14/06/2026 16:59

@whereonthestair congrats on the gold. Was wondering how the national went think there was two on here competing.
DD got silver missed gold by a 1/100th but happier as better set for regional.
DD is very emotional today got period very tired but spent day revising wants to do physics ALevel so need a good grade. Was in tears earlier as her year group are trying to change end of exams get together from Tuesday to Monday she ain't finished till Tuesday.

Just booked spa day for DD and I to chill end of the week. Got limited annual leave left so no summer holiday this year.

UncomfortableSilence · 14/06/2026 17:15

Someone sent me this earlier. I’m not normally one for this sort of thing however it does make you think how far these kids have come and how those last years of primary/first years of secondary were.

Feel free to scroll past me getting overly emotional over here.

waitingquietly · 14/06/2026 17:31

@UncomfortableSilence very understandable - I had one of those shared with me last year when DS1 was gcse victim and it reduced me to tears .

DS1 was very resilient but it all had much more of an impact on DS2 .. I’m sure I’m not the only one wondering who my child would have been without the pandemic stealing his innocence

Funkylights · 14/06/2026 18:13

Covid stole a chunk of their childhood. And screens became more and more prevalent & not leaving the house afterwards. I hate even thinking about it.
meanwhile I’m trying to not get rattled about lack of physics revision

RhinestoneCowgirl · 14/06/2026 18:23

I heard DD having a minor meltdown in the kitchen earlier over physics revision. I stayed out of it and DH handled with aplomb. DD's situation is slightly unusual as she sat English and Maths last summer after a year spent at home due to autistic burnout. This year she's been at a hospital education service and is taking science and Art GCSEs. I am feeling such relief that tomorrow is her final exam (and yes covid did such a number on our DC!)

This is our second time around with exam emotional rollercoaster as we have DS(19). Solidarity to all the parent support teams out there!

makemineadecaf · 14/06/2026 18:40

I’ve been told by dd that physics will be “catastrophic” and to brace for it being her lowest grade. As long as she passes and gets what she wants/ needs for next year, I’m honestly passed caring…. (Is that awful?)
