So I got trigger happy on offer day and accepted the too grammar school offer. I did not receive an email so I logged on the admissions platform and mindlessly clicked on Accept Offer thinking I won’t be able to visit the school otherwise 🙈
We had already accepted an independent offer plus, after visiting the school I came out convinced we dodged a bullet.
Do I call the school, the council or just not show up in September?

Let them know…somebody else may be desperately waiting for a place from the waiting list.

Ladyinamask · 05/03/2026 20:15

Tell them ASAP. why on earth would you think just no turning up that late is ok? Some poor child is probably desperate for that place, leaving it until September causes a massive amount of stress for the child that fills the gap that late.
You just need to make a quick phonecall.

The last bit about waiting until September was in jest.
So call the school, not the council /eadmissions?

The LA. They'll offer it to somebody who actually wants/needs it in the next batch of offers.

Check the email again properly this time 😄 as it may actually say "you have till this date to change your response". The one we got said that.

We have just turned down a state place at an oversubscribed school in favour of an indy place. The council website allowed us to choose no longer required and the school which had sent out admissions info already asked us to email them too if we no longer required the place. I did this so that another child could have the place.

Well done-your son has done very well to get into a grammar school and a private school.
