RGS Guildford

Hi everyone. My son has recently got an offer for RGS Guildford. We live in Ascot and I’ve spent hours trying to figure out how he’d get to school. He’s only 10 and I think it’s 2 trains from Ascot and then a 15 min walk which I think he’s too young for. Does anyone know of any other means, do parents car pool from local areas?

You're looking at potentially over an hour in the car in traffic. That just seems too much for a commute to school unfortunately.

I don’t think that’s a reasonable journey by public transport or road (Guildford traffic is not great). I commuted (by train) from Godalming to Crowthorne for a bit and that wasn’t fun as an adult, with a reasonable walk both ends.

You can ring the registrar and ask how many pupils are registered in your postcode but realistically there are so many schools in a 1 hour radius of Ascot it’s not likely to be many (and Hampton has a school bus from Ascot so if you are at that academic level you can go there instead of RGS). Have you tried the journey during rush hour and do you have an alternative option?

There’s virtually no one from there - it’s slightly less the distance and more the actual journey. The train takes far too long and the traffic will be dreadful. As a PP has said, there are other good schools with better journeys. I say that as an RGS parent and someone who knows the route from Ascot pretty well - though we don’t drive in from nearly that far.

Lots of boys will be walking up the hill from Guildford station, or he can hop onto a train going to London Road Guildford to save the walk.

Looks like you would need to connect at Aldershot - there will probably be pupils on that train (at least from Ash or Wanborough) but I doubt many/any from Ascot itself.

Could you drop him at Aldershot (no idea if traffic any better there than in Guildford)

Thank you everyone. We’re going back to see the school tonight, so will have a look
