Hi
DS started year 7 in SGS this September. Initially we got WCGS place but later on were offered SGS and we accepted.
My son has settled well but we are still not sure about which resources he should use to consolidate learning. What is he expected to do besides the H.W set? The parent watsapp group is not very helpful. People do not respond to queries.
Is there anyone here with a recent experience of SGS who can guide us ?
How much do Y7 boys study every day? Which resources to use for Science, History , Geography etc.?
We are a bit far from school so don't know any parents personally.
Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks

it is only mid October, they are easing the children in. Why does he need to study every day? They will start setting homework and he is learning in school. In the meantime just read, there is plenty of history books if he is interested, go to theatre, find him a hobby.

Thankyou. The H.W is already coming in and he is doing that He is a keen reader and enjoys his extra curricular.
It has been mentioned by school that there will be tests for each subject before Christmas break so I was wondering how can he keep up with that. Being a grammar school it is really fast paced and they have already covered quite a bit in all the three Sciences. He is my first child at secondary so I'm at a loss. I just want to know how boys in this particular school make sure that they are ready for tests and exams for all subjects, specially Sciences, History, Geography, French.Do I need to buy books for each subject ?

Thankyou

Have you asked the school? I emailed a similar query to my son's year 7 form tutor as he doesn't appear to have any text books or lesson notes and was being asked to revise for a maths test; I got a full reply from the head of maths who guided me to various online resources they use that hadn't been apparent before. He's at Tiffin but assume the set up would be similar.

Thankyou. I have not done it yet. To be honest I was reluctant to come up as clueless and did not want to give the impression that my son is struggling.
I'm sure I am wrong and they will be helpful. I will email the form tutor today. Thanks for your reassurance.

Wish your son best of luck.

My sons went to Wilson's, which is a similar school and you should try not to worry too much. Your DS has only just started and the teachers will give all the boys guidance on homework.

MY DS is in year 9 there and we've never done anything more than making sure he keeps up with the homework. It is fast paced but so long as they passed the exam without being too intensively tutored they should be able to keep up.

Thankyou. That's very re assuring.
Can you kindly tell when do they group children in sets. Is it in year 8 ?

I'm not sure, possibly year 9. They've mixed them up for some of their classes this year, but if they're sets DS doesn't know which one he's in.
