In-year grammar test from waiting list

Hi Everyone,

I’d really appreciate some advice. My son has been invited to take an in-year test from the waiting list, but we’re not sure what to expect. Is it similar to the 11+ entry test, or is it different?

The letter only mentions that it’s an adaptive test depending on the child’s ability, but doesn’t give any further details. Has anyone been through this process before and could share what the test is like?

The email says “adaptive online test that adjusts to the ability levels of each individual student, it is an age adjusted and standardised test” Nothing more apart from this.

Thanks so much for your help!

Your going to need to be a bit more specific to get any advice. What school or what area? Is it private, state grammar or state super selective grammar? There's just so many variations nationally!

Hi,
It is for a grammar school in Birmingham.

Sounds similar to some independent schools' adaptive online 11+ exams. Many families use Atom to prepare for these. Is this for Y7 or a later year?

Hi,

This is for Year 8. Does Atom offer adaptive tests?

We haven’t used it personally, but yes - I believe it is the most commonly used adaptive test prep site. It’s mostly for 11+ but because it’s adaptive (and so can go beyond expected levels) it probably would still be useful for an in-year Y8 place. Worth checking out at least

Thank you. I’ll look into Atom and do some more research. We’ve got him BOFA, but the tests seem a bit easy for my child

Yes agree it sounds like Atom or ISEB (very similar). If you subscribe to Atom you can also access ISEB tests via Atom I believe.

The adaptive tests are weird as if a child is doing well they can suddenly get really really hard questions which can throw them. So definitely worth having a practice of adaptive tests.
