World challenge trip

DS’s school has offered a trip to Slovenia via World Challenge in 2027. The boys will have almost finished year 9. Non-compulsory obviously.

It costs £2,100 for a week(!) and they are expected to at least try to raise some of the trip costs themselves. Although realistically what can a 13/14 do to raise substantial funds? I don’t really agree with the whole “sponsor me to go on holiday” thing.

Anyway, I wondered if anyone’s child had done similar (not necessarily Slovenia but world challenge) and what they got out of it, was the cost worth it. There is a meeting shortly about the trip which I will attend but personal experiences would be interesting.

My nephew did it a few years ago and loved every minute. He came back more independent, went from being a fussy eater to eating everything and anything, and is still friends with some of the people he went with.
He made a little bit of the money himself as he sold some clothes and trainers he'd grown out of, the rest was Christmas and birthday money from family instead of gifts

My DD is going on one of these in 2027 at a cost of 4k!!
some of her school friends are raising quite a bit but we’ve got a tiny family and I don’t see how she’s going to manage to make much. I would be delighted if she raised £500 from Vinted and saving birthday money etc. She’s 13 so work opportunities for kids are limited.
it’s a killer price but it’s an incredible opportunity for a bog standard secondary school. I’d never be able to take us as a family and I’m paying it off over 2 years.
