Does anyone know anything about this school, reputation, etc.
My aunt, who lives overseas wants to send her 16 year old son there as a boarder and so am posting on behalf of her before she parts with her money.

Thanks.

I presume its a private school you are talking about, not sure which one though. A friend of mine lives close to Shaftsbury and said most of the state schools are pretty awful. There are some excellent boarding schools in Dorset such as Bryanston, Sherbourne, Canford, Milton Abbey.

wessexgirl · 01/06/2008 17:45

It's not a private school - unusually, it is a state school with boarding provision.

Not sure what it's like now, but didn't have the greatest reputation a few years ago.

Shoshe · 01/06/2008 17:48

I wouldnt let a child of mine go to Bryanston School, I lived in Bryanston, the drug problem was awful.

The Shafesbury School is a vountary Maintained school with a boarding unit.
here

I and my brothers all went to localstate schools in North Dorset and I certainly wouldnt say they were awful. All four of us went on to get Degrees.

Ofsted rate it as good school\113\s511388920080307.xmlhere.

Most of the wealthy families I have worked for have sent their children to Bryanston and a doctor I know is sending her 16 year old there to do her A levels.

yogimum · 01/06/2008 17:54

I'm sure your aunt has done her research before deciding to send her son there.

FeelingEvil · 01/06/2008 18:12

Thanks very much for all your responses.

It's the state school with boarding provision that my Aunt is talking about and I'm afraid my Aunt is not the type to do research. She's weirdly relying on myself and my sister to find out for her. (Think she thinks that England is the size of Hong Kong and that I know the reputation of every school in the country!)

I've emailed her the link to OFSTED report and also the BBC league table thingy which shows that it is academically below average.

Now we've established it's the state school with boarding provision, anyone know of it;s reputation? I'm a bit anxious because I don't want my Aunt to spend all this money thinking she's sending my cousin to some kind of English rural idyll where it's all jolly hockey sticks IYSWIM

Sexey's school in Somerset is a well-regarded state boarding school (I know a couple of expats with kids there who think v. highly of it).

Enid · 02/06/2008 13:11

are you sure she doesnt mean Sexeys?

mankymummy · 02/06/2008 13:12

my friend sends her son there and he boards (they live in France), he's re-sitting exams I think and they are very happy with it AFAIK

FeelingEvil · 02/06/2008 13:19

No, definitely not Sexey's School.
It's the one that Shoshe has posted the link to (see above).

Mankymummy - does your friend send her son to Sexey's or the Shaftesbury School?

Thanks MankyMum, I'll let my Aunt know.
She's gone a bit quiet on me, so not sure what she's thinking at the moment.
