Uniform accommodation

My son chose his school because of his sensory needs around uniforms. The school had track bottoms t shirt and hoodie, perfect. This year he is going into 3rd year, the school had changed the uniform, to smart casual, jeans or trousers and crew sweatshirt and t shirt, he just cant wear jeans or trousers due to SPD, School have said this uniform will be now compulsory. My son is AUDHD/PDA DCD, SPD so complex needs. Where do we stand

Thanks
Cepheus

They are obligated to make reasonable adjustments, and are required to ensure that a pupil with a disability is not disadvantaged by their uniform policy.

If his sensory issues are classed as a disability you can challenge the school in terms of discrimination. Do they have occupational health? They might be able to make allowances of adjustments on his uniform .

I'd send him in wearing the smartest joggers you have - so plain, no combat pockets etc.

DS lives in these, which are more like a thick teeshirt material rather than a lined sweatshirt.

Any use??

School is obliged to make Reasonable Adjustments for his disability. Get this agreed in writing and also what he is to do if he is challenged by a member of staff who doesn’t know him.

Contact the Senco, copying in his head of year and form teacher, to get things started.

What is it about jeans and trousers that he struggles with? There might be alternatives out there that would comply with the uniform policy, particularly if he doesn’t want to stand out.

Contact the SENCO, it'll be part of his adjustments.
