I phoned the admissions team on Monday and was told my DC is first on the waiting list for our preferred school. I phoned again on Wednesday and Friday looking for an update but no one picked up - I only phoned twice as I didn't want t to seem pushy.
I will try again on Tuesday but I'm panicking now there won't be a space for DC, otherwise we would have been told. Other school is a nightmare to get to and DC will need to be taken there.
However likely is movement during the week before term starts? School is very popular.

There will be people that don’t turn up because either they’ve taken a private school place and forgotten to decline the state one or they’ve moved abroad and forgotten that piece of admin amongst everything else. So I’d be quietly confident but it may not actually be before term starts. Good luck to you both!

There is often still movement in the first couple of weeks of the year so don’t give up hope yet.

Just to be on the safe side I contacted the school to say I wanted the place even if it came up after the start of term. I spent the first day of term shopping for his new school uniform. He went in generic grey trousers and white shirt and a borrowed tie for the first day.

Good luck.

There's likely to be some movement up to the start of term and in the first week. First on the waiting list means it only takes one kid to move on... However, don't count on it completely as in get to the first day of term with your kid having no uniform for or idea how to travel to their assigned school, because you can't count on it!

Might depend on where the school is, my son's school was a grammar school close to a large teaching hospital and university. It seemed to mean people moved during the summer and maybe didn't let school know. It wasn't unusual.

Dc definitely do turn up so movement goes on for a few weeks

hangerup · 23/08/2025 16:23

Ours is a non selective Welsh medium state school. There is no Welsh medium private secondary school option (anywhere) and it’s the only school of its type in the county.
