Very belatedly on this thread Teen (was too busy yakking on Higher Ed discussions) but how fantastic for her, you must all be really pleased.

Morning everyone.
Crikey these kids have done well - even where grades have been missed they’re showing great resilience!
Good luck to those awaiting reviews. So sorry to hear about the enrolling debacles and chat boxes de-registering. Wtf

It’s taken me a couple of days to catch up with the thread. I wasn’t ready to post or read the messages on Thursday. My friend’s 21yr old DD’s brain tumour has returned. I’ve not told DD yet. She was so ecstatic about her results, it wouldn’t have been fair.
DD got her results online but we always said we would go in to school regardless of grades so we could personally thank the teachers for all their hard work. It was actually really lovely. She’s one mark from an 8 in maths so she gave permission to the EO for her teacher to look at her script. I doubt it’ll change as it’s maths and will be easy to spot right / wrong answers. She’s chuffed with the 7 anyway. She got 9 Eng Lit, 9 Eng Lang, 9 History, 8 PE, 8 Food, 7 maths, 7 physics, 6 biology & 6 chemistry. We were blown away to be honest as she was anticipating a mix of 5/6 maybe a 7 and very likely 4’s for physics & chemistry!

She goes to enrol at her new school on 1st Sept. I think she’s sticking with her chosen A levels but given the 9’s in history & English she may decide to switch. She had chosen sociology, politics, psychology & business. I’ve not spoken to her as she dashed off to Reading festival on Thursday afternoon & very excited to go to the silent disco.

NotDonna · 23/08/2025 09:48

Huge well done to your DD @TeenToTwenties - I thought I’d read the whole thread but maybe I missed that! So pleased!!! 🥳

Allromanticsmeetthesamefate · 23/08/2025 10:10

Late reply here, busy work week, I feel like we were at DD’s school receiving results, I blinked and now it’s Saturday morning! 😅

Well done to all our amazing kids, I agree with what someone said up thread, I don’t remember the pressure that this generation feel over exams and results, especially given that Covid really affected the first few years of their school experience.

Over the moon for my DD, all 7 & 8’s and had a email almost straight away congratulating her into her 6th form and chosen A levels which she was just as excited about as opening the results!

She was a little disappointed with her WJEC drama result as had received a 9 in previous mocks and got full marks for component 2, dropped 4 in component 1 and 17 on component 3 but as 1 & 3 were worth double that trumped the better mark, and she meant she was 4 points (really only 2) off an 8!!

Apparently we can’t appeal but any advice would be great as it’s one of chosen A levels.

waitingquietly · 23/08/2025 10:24

I’m not sure I’m ever going to catch up on missed messages as the site keeps glitching for me .. wondering if it’s the adverts again .

Just wanted to wish luck to those who are still struggling with results and reviews and trying to get on roll for the next option .

Thanks Sisu. Hers was AQA too. We haven't contacted the school and they certainly haven't contacted us. Not sure what we could gain from it if she ends up with 4/3?? Not even sure how it all works and regret legging it now.

i missed this.. DD did AQA combined science and got 4/3. IS there an issue with the scoring for AQA this year?

@OhCrumbsWhereNow

Well done!! Music, an 8!!!! 🥳🥳🥳 🎶.. amazing!!! And, EXCELLENT she is off to study it.

Her Distinction in Creative Media is fab, and Maths is great 4 in Higher ( I think we both were stressing about whether made right choice as to move from Foundation.. I know I was!!)..

I’m so, so sorry to hear she is so upset and disappointed with both her English. I know how hard she worked, more importantly she has to work due to her dyslexia….. I remember the Macbeth! To be considered gifted at creative writing and song lyrics, but to have your self confidence and esteem so knocked by bloody GCSE’s is so very upsetting. Well done for giving her a pep talk, it’s such a shame one was needed after her fantastic achievements!!

……. I bet she will be the next “ Billie Elilish”.., ( or, of your choosing! I just know she started writing her songs at about 13! And would probably not give a flying about the thought of being “ pigeon holed” by such gcse silliness!)…

I hope she will have the most wonderful time at Music 🎶 School!!!

Thank you! Is it odd that I keep having to go and double check the piece of paper for that 8. Honestly, never in our wildest dreams did we think she'd pull it out of the hat on that written paper. I am so happy for her.

And yes, I well remember our stresses over Foundation v Higher. I did say if she'd gone for Foundation and got the 5 then she'd be wondering 'what if' with the Higher. And a 4 is a C and more importantly no resits.

The English Lit we've asked for review - but also said no rush to school as it doesn't change anything for her whereas there must be loads of kids where the results of a review could change where they go so they need priority right now. But yes, the bouncing around after the Macbeth just makes me think there is something very off - she doesn't have generous markers as teachers so if they agree I feel confident enough about sending it off.

She'd like the Language looked at, but I've said not to. Too risky to have a review and it would potentially be far too tempting. It feels a big thing now, but it won't be in the future. I've never put my grades on cvs, just have '9 GCSEs (A-C) incl English & Maths' so I said she could do the same.

Lol, I would be very happy if she was the next Billie... suspect she'd replace that with Sabrina 😂. She's been writing since she was 12 and is on a development programme with a label on the back of that - which I pointed out was rather more of an endorsement of her language skills than whatever Edexcel wanted on a random Tuesday in May! She's normally very resilient so I've been surprised how upset she is over it (Geography she could not care less about and that was a 3).

Soundofshuna · 23/08/2025 12:39

Mixed week for us. Elder dd didn’t change marks after review so has lost her Oxbridge place. Younger did really well and exceeded expectations with mainly 8&9 but an unexpected 6 in chemistry ( an A level choice) school happy for her to go ahead but slightly anxious as wondering if an A will be too much of a stretch. ( needed for proposed career plan)

Apologies for radio silence! Busy day Thursday and now sunning on a beach in Greece!
2 9s 4 8s 26s and 25s. One was in a foundation subject so the best result! Combined science was a 9/8 and one off a 9/9 so going to try and find that extra mark. School still not replied! Grr. 8 in maths but slightly upset they raised the grade boundaries. Would have been a good 9 last year. But 8/9 in all alevel subjects. She was happy.

Hey!! I was wondering how you’d gone on!! Congratulations!!! Excellent news!! I hope you hear from the school and get the extra mark..in any event, stormingly good result!!!

Enjoy your 🌞 beach!!! 🏖️ x

Any more updates on grade reviews, or do we think they won’t be working over the weekend/bank hol? I just want to KNOW! People keep asking what DC got, and would so love to tell them the higher grade they’re so close to…

Fantastic results. The 9 is Maths is so tough. I just worked out dd got 89% which seems amazingly high but a 9 was 91%, just 5 marks more out of a possible 240.

labradorservant · 23/08/2025 14:46

Thank you. The maths think is a bit bonkers. DS got 205 2 years ago and got a 9. Dd got 211 and an 8. Can’t compare years but she’s is claiming victory 😂. Also beat him in further maths. Also pleased that with her subject combinations she can’t do further maths as she didn’t want to but felt she might be asked. Think we’ll look at an EPQ instead.

Eccle80 · 23/08/2025 15:42

I’d seen something about one of the boards having a big jump in boundaries for maths. DS was AQA so not affected by that, but I know he’d gone on before about how high it was to get a 9 (I think 220 out of 240) and that you couldn’t afford to lose many marks, whereas in the sciences it’s much lower.

@Soundofshuna really sorry about your eldest’s place, that must be tough. On your younger one, if it was unexpected and they were capable of higher, it may still be worth taking it. Did they feel the exams went badly at the time?

Allromanticsmeetthesamefate · 23/08/2025 15:46

For comparing this years Maths grade boundaries to previous, DD found on good old Tictok!

Well grade boundaries are done after all the papers are marked and they re-do to essentially balance it so that each papers grades are not harder or easier to get the grade. Even if someone might say they paper was easier - it won't be easier to get an 8 in one year compared to the next. So it standardised that way. So it's more the grade that's showing the ability than a mark each year.

Michele09 · 23/08/2025 15:50

I wonder if the same percentage of students get a 9 in sciences v maths otherwise it seems a bit unfair, maybe lots more get in the 90s% in Maths than Science. Dd got 215 out of 240 AQA so felt a bit hard done by with an 8. But she can happily do A level as she needed a 7 so all is well.

If she's going to work hard and stay focused then still take it, many she should spend some time going over bits of the GCSE content before she starts because the content builds upon GCSE content and it will be a jump. But if she's willing to do that, then she should still go for it, especially if it's needed for her future career.

What grade will she need for university? I'm guessing it's something like medicine, densitry, veterinary medicine, or chemical engineering etc. So that's normally looking at an A especially for MDV as there's so many applicants and it's competitive for all universities. Decades ago B'a could get you in, but that's more of a toss up these days that most wouldn't risk.

I'd still start it and just make sure she works hard at it, goes to her teachers for help etc, and uses any online resources. She'll likely be fine if she was pretty standard across GCSEs and her school are okay with it.

Well different amount of students do a subject. You have to remember there's 4 tiers with sciences - so combined foundation, combine higher, triple science (you can do foundation in some or higher in the others). So it won't be the same amount of people for all 4 in a way (r.g triple foundation chem, triple higher chem, combined foundation chem and combined higher chem) compared to maths.

The rules around grade boundaries are to make sure that it's no more easier or harder one year to get a grade (so the marks are adjusted in that way and based on how many people got higher marks to lower marks). It doesn't make sense to focus on how many students across subjects got a grade each year - instead the exam board focus on each subject. So how many people got each grade for each subject. For the sciences that will be seperate to each of the 4 tiers (not the total number across all 4).

The reason they cannot and shouldn't so per subject I'd are you going to do it per subject across all exam boards? Or within an exam board - why should it matter? It's about making sure its no easier to get a 9 in history AQA each year (so it will be a similar amount of people each year) rather than making sure across AQA history and geography the same amount people get 9s. The same for science, or maths and everything else.* *

@MrsHamletwhen do schools publish their results. I'm interested to know how many got a 9 in a subject DD missed it on.

AQA have published cumulative percentages for the grades this year. I’m sure other boards do the same.

Ah - I thought the poster wanted the info for their school. My mistake.

TheyNotLikeUs · 23/08/2025 16:46

@MrsHamlet, I did want it for the school but @QueenMabby's link is very interesting nonetheless.

I think it was @QueenMabbywho said a few months ago that after sitting exams, high achieving pupils fixate on difficult questions and so expect a drop in grades. DD did that so we were pleasantly surprised that she didn't drop grades in many subjects.

Anybody else have DC/ friends who are modest with sharing their results? DD just tells people she is very pleased unless they offer to say their grades first.
